Job Description

The Manager, Cell Mechanical Design supports all aspects of mechanical cell design of Li-ion systems in product development at 24M. This includes but is not limited to supporting the development of packaging design to achieve customer targets with proper consideration to DFM and DFA requirements, drafting of mechanical drawings, development of specifications, validation of designs, and supporting the design and development of fixtures, assembly processes, enclosures, and materials selection. These objectives will be achieved working in close collaboration with cross-functional teams comprising other mechanical designers, R&D scientists, electrochemical engineers, process engineers and manufacturing. Experience in high-volume manufacturing / packaging will be highly valued. This position will manage 2 more junior mechanical engineers, so leadership and mentoring skills are critical, as is the desire to be hands-on and a direct contributor.


Responsibilities:

  • Bring new technologies from the bench-top proof-of-concept to production-ready design, working closely with R&D and manufacturing engineering
  • Develop electrochemical storage device enclosures, terminals, and internal structures/assemblies consistent with performance, mechanical, life, and cost targets
  • Develop and document specifications; create mechanical models and drawings
  • Create and execute validation plans for new product designs (DVPR)
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to ensure that designs meet the requirements of DFM, DFA
  • Participate in failure modes and effects analysis (DFMEA, PFMEA)
  • Support failure analyses on test cells and product
  • Design and create test and assembly fixtures, hardware, etc.
  • Identify and validate equipment and material suppliers and maintain relationship networks
  • Support supplier development activities
  • Set realistic but challenging goals and milestones for the mechanical engineering team and specific projects; execute to plan.

Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge across multiple sealing technologies: crimp sealing, laser welding, ultrasonic welding, resistance welding, hermetic sealing, heat sealing for the electrochemical devices requirement or other products requiring high-quality/long life sealing
  • Deep knowledge of sealing liability test requirements for batteries, automobile devices, food packaging, or other demanding products containing solvent, oil, acid or similar contents. This would include heat shock, helium leak tests, water vapor transmission tests, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Basic knowledge of the fundamentals of mechanical design for highly reliable products
  • Strong problem solving skills, with the ability to combine theory with empirical observation
  • Ability to interact effectively with vendors and colleagues
  • Self-motivated, persistent, hands-on, and results-oriented
  • Strong written and oral communication
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • High degree of professionalism, maturity, and good judgment
  • Desire and ability to develop more junior staff


Required Experience

  • 7+ years’ experience in Li-ion cell or other products with high quality/reliability thresholds
  • Experiences launching a highly reliable product in the market, including high volume manufacturing


Areas of Independent Action

  • Develop, execute, review, interpret, and report to managers or VP of Product Development or other executives on mechanical engineering group plans and results


Supervisory Responsibility  

  • Manage a small group of (2-3) Mechanical Engineers


Physical and Environmental Standards

  • Able to travel to support development activities with suppliers, partners, customers, etc.
  • Able to work in a dry room environment with relative humidity < 1% (dewpoint < -50°C),
  • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers
