Job Description

The Seattle Times is looking for a strong leader to oversee production of the seattletimes.com homepage, keeping it fresh with a dynamic mix of breaking news, enterprise reporting and the best local information for our audience. This person will report to the editor for digital news and is charged with the day-to-day oversight of the homepage team. This is a demanding role that requires a solid foundation in journalistic principles and ethics, good interpersonal skills, the ability to juggle tasks and quickly adapt to changing needs, a willingness to keep up with the latest technical skills and techniques and the desire to work collaboratively with journalists across the newsroom.

 

The successful candidate will: develop content strategies for seattletimes.com, work across the newsroom to plan for major news coverage, help develop new ways of presenting and packaging news content, help allocate resources and manage scheduling, and assess processes and workflow to find new efficiencies. The ideal candidate is able to work independently, but as also part of a dynamic and evolving newsroom.

 

Job duties include:

  • Homepage production and oversight
  • Organizing and leading news presentation teams for both breaking and enterprise coverage
  • Working with various functional areas and teams, including the newsroom and development groups
  • Management of homepage assets and resources
  • Maintaining standards for style, news mix and design
  • Developing a mastery of our CMS to monitor and improve workflow
  • Integrating staff, user and trusted third-party content, from text to Twitter, into compelling home page presentations

Qualifications

Required skills:

  • Excellent news judgment, knowledge of AP style, understanding of SEO/SMO and strong writing ability, particularly for headline and summary writing
  • Deep understanding of how readers consume information online
  • Understanding of social media
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, web-based CMS, web design, blogging and other web tools
  • Conceptual understanding of multimedia for web
  • Conceptual understanding of mobile presentations across various platforms
  • Project management skills and proven leadership ability

Candidates must have a minimum of three years experience as a producer for a news website.
