Job Description

We are looking for an experienced business reporter to produce high-impact stories about the economy.
In the aftermath of the Great Recession, the economy has become one of the most provocative and important beats for any news organization. We want someone who will think broadly and explore a full range of stories – from employment and inflation to international trade to corporate affairs to consumer behavior.
This is not a beat for rookies or for those who shy away from the big stage. We’re looking for someone who can develop sharp, intuitive reporting on major trends in the Minnesota economy. Candidates should be fluent in basic economic concepts and comfortable with data-driven reporting. The reporter will be expected to produce a full range of coverage – both online and in print – and to embrace opportunities to collaborate with other reporters.
The economy is a complex and fascinating beat, as the Twin Cities metro area is in many ways a microcosm of the nation as a whole. Minnesota is home to 20 Fortune 500 firms covering every segment of the economy – from retail (Target) to manufacturing (3M) to medical technology (Medtronic) to banking (U.S. Bank). The ninth district of the Federal Reserve Board is based here.
In this environment, sophisticated coverage of the economy is a mandate from readers. Our staff of four editors and 18 writers, including one based in Washington, D.C., is deeply invested in producing meaningful and insightful stories about the world of business and the larger economic questions that dictate how we work, live and play. In the past year, we have won a prestigious Loeb Award in Financial Journalism and been selected by SABEW as one of the top business sections in the country, alongside the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.

Qualifications

This is a high-profile beat. We want to compete nationally, so we are looking for experienced reporters who have demonstrated an ability to produce engaging, sophisticated stories.

We are looking for someone with proven ability to produce A1-level work on a consistent basis. Ideal candidates will be expected to build a diverse network of sources – from CEOs to front-line employees to academics to regulators.
