Job Description

The Star Tribune is seeking a dynamic, thoughtful business columnist to provide a leading voice in the Twin Cities community.
The business columnist should have the heartbeat of a reporter, building each column on a foundation of astute research. The columnist will produce columns that our tough-minded and fair. We need an authoritative voice that will deliver insight on a consistent basis.
We celebrate the column that is pegged to news events and seek a writer whose point of view will be anything but predictable. The business columnist should expect to write two to three columns a week and engage the community online as well, possibly through a blog, online chats, Twitter and other outlets.
A business columnist at the Star Tribune will have no trouble finding fascinating topics to explore. Minnesota is home to 20 Fortune 500 firms covering every segment of the economy – from retail (Target) to manufacturing (3M) to medical technology (Medtronic) to banking (U.S. Bank).
In this environment, sophisticated business coverage is a mandate from readers. Our staff of four editors and 18 writers, including one based in Washington, D.C., is deeply invested in producing meaningful and high-impact stories about the world of business and the economy. In the past year, we have won a prestigious Loeb Award in Financial Journalism and were selected as one of the top business sections in the country by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

Qualifications

This is a high-profile role. We compete nationally in business news coverage, so we are looking for experienced journalists who have demonstrated an ability to produce engaging, sophisticated columns and enterprise.
