Job Description

The Technical Lead is a senior individual contributor responsible for executing and overseeing end-to-end payroll accounting activities with a high level of accuracy, compliance, and timeliness. This role acts as the technical expert and primary point of escalation for complex reconciliations, journal entries, and payroll-related financial analysis.

The Payroll Accounting Technical Lead partners closely with Payroll, HR, and Finance stakeholders to maintain the integrity of payroll financial data and ensure adherence to internal controls, SOX requirements, and audit standards. The role also drives process improvements, promotes best practices, and supports a culture of accountability and operational excellence within the payroll accounting function.

Responsibilities & Duties: 

  • Serve as the main point of contact for coordinating payroll accounting activities across payroll process leads, senior specialists, and specialists to ensure accurate and timely results.
  • Oversee and perform the preparation, review, and posting of payroll journals, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls, company policies, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Review and validate reconciliations for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
  • Act as the primary liaison for internal and external audits related to payroll accounting.
  • Partner with Payroll Operations, HR, and Finance to investigate and resolve discrepancies and issues.
  • Track performance against SLAs and ensure all deliverables are completed within required timelines.
  • Lead remediation initiatives and conduct learning sessions to enhance GBS expertise in payroll accounting processes and controls.
  • Provide subject-matter guidance to peers and serve as an escalation point for complex issues.
  • Prepare and present reports and analytics on payroll accounting performance, variances, and trends.
  • Support back-up coverage planning and contribute to business continuity across the payroll accounting function.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of 6–8 years of accounting experience, including 4+ years in payroll accounting
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end payroll accounting processes, including accruals, reconciliations, and variance analysis
  • Experience in systems such as Workday, ADP, Oracle, or SAP
  • CPA qualification preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with Blackline or similar reconciliation tools is an advantage
  • Strong analytical, leadership, and stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
