Who We Are

Marion P. Thomas Charter School (MPTCS) is the largest independently-operated free public charter school in Newark, NJ. MPTCS was established in 1999 by a group of individuals who were born and raised in Newark and wanted to provide the best possible educational experience for the next generation of Newarkers. The school is one of the only minority-led charter schools in Newark, reflecting both its student population and the community it serves. MPTCS has grown from four classrooms to four campuses and now serves 1,500 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade.

Who We Hire
The MPTCS - SELECT Academy offers a single-gender classroom environment for boys and girls.  As a community-initiated and operated school, each and every MPTCS SELECT staff member believes that every child can learn and achieve in a single-gender classroom setting that is created to foster their growth and development. This is a full-time position and reports to the school’s Principal.

For this role, the Spanish teacher will be responsible for but not limited to:

• Passionate about single gender teaching and learning
• An effective communicator
• A community relationship builders (students, parents, staff, community-at-large)
• Committed to making a difference in a child’s life every day
• A positive thinker and doer who is looking to contribute to the overall development of our young boys and girls.
• Rigorous student instruction on Elementary grade level to increase interest and desire to master the Spanish Language
• Assist in developing sound curriculum for Spanish World Languages
• Prepare lesson plans and teach according to NJ common core standards 
• Teach and prepare students in accordance with curriculum
• Manage classroom discipline 
• Ensures safety and well-being of students at all times 
• Maintains logs and records as necessary 
• Prepare student report cards, keep files and record 
• Ability to work with others to achieve academic success of students 
• Ability to have productive relationship with parent/guardians
• Regular and punctual attendance and serve as a role model for all students and staff
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and\or Chief Academic Officer

What We Require

•  Valid New Jersey CEAS, Provisional or Standard certification is required.
• At least 1-2 years of experience working with children in an urban setting, preferably in a single-gender learning environment.
• Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Open to receiving feedback and implementing solutions to improve professional growth and performance.
• Willingness to take responsibility for student success.
