Job Description

The One Alcoa philosophy states that the company feels responsible and accountable for everyone within our facilities, including Alcoa employees, contractors, and visitors.  The majority of recent serious injuries on our grounds have happened to contractors.  The contractor population is very significant for the company, both in size and risk.  The approach to help contractors work safely is not identical to the approach to keep Alcoa employees safe.  Contractors are often a transient group, exposed to significant hazards.  The Global Contractor Safety Leader will focus on this important segment of our overall program, providing needed attention and support.

 

1. Primary Purpose of the Function. 

Lead Alcoa’s efforts to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries in the contractor population, and to significantly reduce all injuries and high potential events.  Orchestrate, drive, and implement best-in-class solutions, tools, practices, and systems.

2. Major activities/Key challenges

  • Provide examples, remove roadblocks, and help the various business units and their sites implement the company’s contractor safety standard
  • Work with Procurement and Legal to increase consistency in contracting and to look for global solutions and strategies
  • Promote the sharing of best practice, learning, and internal benchmarking
  • Closely track progress on key initiatives and report it.  Compile, interpret, and communicate relevant leading and lagging indicators
  • Collaborate with EHS peers, key operations leaders, and other individuals and functions to reach excellence in contractor safety management
  • A needed, lead risk assessments, incident investigations, audits and training.  Develop a global contractor safety class for project managers
  • Stay informed about regulatory trends, industry developments, innovative solutions, etc
  •  Support various programs and activities within the overall company EHS strategy, and fulfill other functions and tasks as needed

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of total relevant safety experience.  At least five years in the mining/metals industry.  At least five years in a global position in a specific EHS field, or in a regional, multi-site position as a broad EHS leader
  • Specific experience in mining, refining, and smelting highly desirable
  • Safety engineer or equivalent.  Masters preferred
  • A strong leader, able to create teams, develop plans, drive progress
  • Organized, structured, able to multi-task and to meet tight deadlines
  • Assertive, strong influencer, driven, able to sell ideas, plans, and projects
  • Customer oriented, good listener, superior people skills, open and direct, approachable
  • Strong communicator, able to produce succinct and impactful reports, comfortable presenting, at ease talking to executives and to hourly workers
  • Energetic, results oriented, possessing a track record of achieving measured superior performance improvements
  • Fully fluent in English, verbal and written.  Knowledge of French or Portuguese desirable
  • Domestic and international travel required
