Job Description

Lead analytical chemistry operations and method development to support  advanced smelting applications. This position will address analytical needs in the application of techniques to analyze raw materials, intermediate compounds and finished products in aluminum smelting, including R&D projects and problem solving investigations relating to these areas.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES/KEY CHALLENGES

  • Initiate and lead R&D projects, define objectives and work plan, and conduct research that advances scientific knowledge for the improvement of advanced smelting processes
  • Apply detailed knowledge of analytical chemistry to develop new analysis methods
  • Implement chemical analysis characterization methods for materials used in smleting processes
  • Solve problems to root cause, seek and identify opportunities for improvements, and implement solutions required to improve materials and production processes
  • Conduct research in laboratory, pilot, and commercial scale environments
  • Support scale-up of materials and aluminum production facilities
  • Foster collaborative relationships within and between work groups, including external workgroups and stakeholders
  • Provide functional guidance and training to technicians and other engineers/scientists
  • Interface with internal stakeholders to develop scope, schedule, and cost to meet objectives of R&D projects
  • Diligently communicate progress and results through written technical reports, presentations, patents, and publications

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Fundamental knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry
  • Hands-on expertise in X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis techniques
  • Expertise in Thermogravimetric (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Differential Thermal (DTA) analysis techniques preferred but not required
  • Working knowledge of LECO methods for oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulfur analyses
  • Working knowledge of particle size and surface area measurement methods
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work and lead effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to develop project plans and execute in a disciplined fashion to meet objectives within the timeline
  • Ability to work with resources within and outside the program team to accomplish the work required
  • Strong organization and analytical skills for data management, analysis, and presentation of results

Qualifications

  • Minimum B.S. degree in Chemistry, M.S. degree preferred 
  • 5 years of experience
  • 2 years in analytical chemistry
