Job Description

The UK Academic Summer Camps Manager is responsible for the successful leadership, development and delivery of the Alpadia language course in the U.K.

The course goals and objectives are specified in the company’s promotional activities. Successful preparation and delivery is also determined by adherence to the standards set out in the British Council Accreditation U.K. framework.

PRE-SUMMER

Recruitment & Selection

  1. To lead the teacher selection process ensuring that teams’ talent is maximized
  2. To ensure that each school’s teaching team profile is compliant with the Accreditation UK framework
  3. To assist with teacher recruitment marketing efforts, working closely with the recruitment team
  4. To assist with teacher onboarding where necessary

Teacher Training Responsibilities

  1. To design and deliver a training programme for the local Academic Managers, ensuring they are fully prepared to lead individual teaching teams
  2. To ensure that the process for timetabling of students, teachers and  rooms is robustly understood by local Academic Managers
  3. To provide pre-arrival and recorded training to the UK portfolio’s teaching team
  4. To provide pre-summer online workshops and FAQ sessions pre-summer
  5. To design, support and deliver the in-person teacher inductions
  6. To design, support and deliver accreditation compliance training to all academic staff

Course Development Responsibilities

  1. To review the course principles and course design, taking account of student and teacher feedback
  2. To review the course content, taking account of student and teacher feedback
  3. To review the teaching resources, ensuring they support the course principles and design
  4. To review the Course Outlines and ensure they are made known to teachers and students

Resources Responsibilities:

  1. To identify where ICT is available/required and in what format
  2. To help prepare ICT training presentations and resources for academic managers and teachers
  3. To liaise with host providers and the operations team to ensure access to classroom ICT
  4. To liaise with host providers and the operations team to ensure the classroom teaching space is sufficient and appropriate for the summer camp student numbers
  5. To ensure student portfolios and other academic resources are distributed to centres, working with the operations team

DURING SUMMER

Leadership

  1. To safeguard and promote the wellbeing of all students in our care
  2. To demonstrate leadership of the department, working with the local academic managers in order to ensure course delivery is of the highest possible standard
  3. To ensure that the teaching team is properly distributed across the portfolio, working closely with recruitment to redeploy where necessary, as well as ensuring cover arrangements are effective
  4. To ensure consistency across the UK academic programme, ensuring the curriculum is understood and followed by the teaching team
  5. To promote good teaching practice, especially concerning points to be addressed from previous inspections
  6. Potentially, to oversee the academic programme of a specific UK centre
  7. To oversee student classing, teacher and classroom timetabling across the portfolio, ensuring it follows agreed practice and guidelines
  8. To oversee administration and record keeping across the portfolio

Support

  1. To provide support to academic staff and teachers across the portfolio
  2. To provide cover for the other local academic managers and administrative staff due to sickness or absence
  3. To provide teaching cover in UK centres due to sickness or absence

Observations & CPD

  1. To ensure each school develops and follows an effective teacher observation plan
  2. To support and complete supervisory and developmental observations of teachers
  3. To ensure feedback is provided to teachers in timely fashion, in a manner appropriate to a summer language school
  4. To design, support and deliver developmental workshops for teachers and academic managers at UK centres

British Council

  1. To facilitate, support and prepare for any British Council inspections
  2. To prepare inspection material such as staff profiles and rationales
  3. To ensure the academic team have clear guidance, training and support to ensure points to be addressed are actioned in the classroom
  4. To prepare evidence that inspection points to be addressed have been actioned

To assist with other tasks as reasonably requested by the wider ALPADIA management team

Qualifications

Essential

  • TEFLQ Qualified or equivalent
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead, motivate and inspire others
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Tools
  • Experience of EFL teaching in a continuous enrolment setting
  • Experience of managing a team

Desirable

  • Experience of observing and providing feedback to teachers
  • Experience of designing and delivering training and CPD programmes
  • Experience of teaching young learners in an EFL summer school environment
  • Experience of managing EFL academic courses in a summer school environment
  • Experience of recruitment and selection
  • Experience of EFL course development (particularly junior courses)
  • Experience of using CLASS software
  • Customer Service experience
  • Experience of managing young learner summer school programmes
  • Experience of managing multiple sites
  • Experience of project management
  • Experience of working within, and knowledge of, the Accreditation UK quality framework
  • Experience and understanding of classroom ICT facilities including printing, copying, IWBs, OHPs and user profile management

Additional Information

We offer you:

  • A competitive salary of £37,000- pro rata

Additional notes: 

  • This is a fixed term contract: January 2024 – September 2024 inclusive
  • Note that during the operating period (22.06.2024 – 10.08.2024) the position requires potentially long hours and weekend working
  • The work location outside of the operating period is remote. During the operating period, frequent travel will often be required between our camps based across the South-East of England. Travel expenses are paid and accommodation will be available on request, subject to availability

  • All staff employed will be required to provide / undergo an Enhanced DBS check (and provide overseas conduct certificates where applicable)
