Job Description

Job Title: Senior Accounting Manager  

Internal Job Level: Senior Manager  

FLSA Status: Full-time, Exempt  

Supervisory Responsibilities: None  

Reporting to Title: Senior Director, Finance  

Salary: $85,000 to $110,000 per year

Location: Currently remote, but DC Metropolitan Area candidate preferred

 

SUMMARY: The Senior Accounting Manager will assist the Senior Director, Finance in managing the day-to-day accounting operations for the Foundation and its affiliated entities, specifically by being responsible for the complex accounting activities related to the maintenance of the general ledger and generation of financial statements and management reports for all entities. They will apply their knowledge of accounting best practices and knowledge of all organizations’ policies and procedures to manage daily operations and support the further development of departmental practices that enhance productivity, efficiency and compliance with state and federal regulations. The Senior Manager will be expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously and provide problem-solving support, both within Finance/Accounting and to stakeholders across the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Finance and Accounting Operations  

  • Manage monthly closing and preparation of financial statements on a timely basis  
  • Manage and maintain the accuracy of the General Ledger and other reconciliations, including Balance Sheet account reconciliations, Bank accounts, Prepaid and deposits (insurance, HSA, etc.), Fixed assets and related depreciation, Accrued payroll and benefits, Subsidiary ledgers, including grant detail per the Fluxx grant management system  
  • Manage the execution of month-end close routines, including but not limited to, preparing monthly allocations  
  • Maintain fixed asset module  
  • Assist Senior Director with preparation of the annual audits and related IRS Form 990s  
  • Maintain proper and detailed records including index of reporting sources and methodology for audit purposes  
  • Partner with Finance and IT teams to identify, recommend, and implement systems and process improvements, including systems for improved financial controls  
  • Assist Senior Director with maintaining knowledge of and compliance with local, state and federal reporting requirements  
  • Maintain knowledge and stay abreast of developments in the fields of accounting and finance with a focus on not-for-profit sector and operating foundations and social welfare organizations in particular  

Reporting and Analysis  

  • Assist with the preparation of the annual budgets  
  • Develop integrated revenue/expense analyses, projections, statistical analyses, reports and presentations.  
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual variance analysis of actual results vs. budget or other forecasted amounts  
  • Collaborate with program staff to produce timely, accurate and efficient records and financial reports that support programmatic needs  
  • Manage the development and timely completion of quarterly board reports and review for accuracy, completion and appropriate disclosures  
  • Assist Senior Director with drafting financial updates and presentations for staff and Board meetings  
  • Compile financial data needed for state and federal lobbying and campaign finance reports  

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant professional field with a minimum of (5) five years of experience in a role of Accounting Manager or similar position.  
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles.  
  • Significant experience with accounting software (Intacct preferred) and additional direct experience with financial and productivity applications such as Nexonia, Bill.com and Excel.  
  • Experience working in multi-entity nonprofits, such as (c)(3)s with affiliated (c)(4)s or (c)(6)s, a plus.
  • Understanding of grant management processes is a plus.  
  • Exceptional attention to detail, highly organized and the ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities and deadlines.  
  • Ability to think strategically, exercise judgment and act independently with limited supervision.  
  • Advanced ability to read and comprehend complex instructions. Ability to write statistical reports and related financial correspondence.  
  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language at a college level, perform mathematical calculations required for the position and learn to interpret and comprehend company policies and procedures.
