Job Description

Hatch and Bantrel have formed the Hatch Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. After successfully completing the Definition Phase Study for the project, the HBJV is currently carrying out the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published TIC of US $5.3-5.7 Billion this will represent one of the largest projects and private investments in Canada. The HBJV will use a hybrid of best-in-class new developing technologies and systems as well as the proven HBJV suite of tools to execute this exciting project. 

Reporting to the IPT Mining Construction Superintendent, the IPT Mining Construction Supervisor will oversee the daily (24 / 7) construction activities and manage the coordination of mining contractors for the field execution within shafts and underground development. They will be responsible for supporting the Mining Construction Superintendent to ensure the Contractors and their construction execution work is properly planned and ready in accordance with engineering drawings, and that the work complies with the site requirements, focusing priorities on safety, risk, and quality. They will drive field execution with Contractors to optimize “best for project” schedule and construction delivery. They will foster a Team Jansen approach to construction execution and assist in solving work face problems with the Contractors. Supervisors deal directly with contractors at the workface, spending 80% of their time in the field.

* Please note this position is not eligible for a relocation subsidy or living out allowance. This will be a camp position on a 15 day on 13 day off rotation.

In this full-time permanent role, as a champion of diversity & inclusion, you will:

Accountabilities:

  • Ensures the effective implementation of Jansen Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) processes, plans, procedures and ensure alignment with the project goals
  • Champions (and participates in) the field leadership program. Manages contractors to ensure Zero Harm is achieved.
  • Support the Manager Mining Construction and the Construction Superintendents (Shaft) in the execution the Jansen Project Shaft, Headframe, and underground scopes
  • Support transition of contractors, including prepping for upcoming contractors and contractor mobilization, setup, and demobilization
  • Indirectly supervises and coordinates construction operations (supervisors and workers) as representative of the IPT leadership
  • Observe and provide feedback on compliance to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Job Hazard Assessments (JHA’s)
  • Responds to incidents in the field and participates in investigations, while acting as a field coordinator where required.
  • Coach and mentor Team Jansen workers (contractor and IPT team members) in the field, removing barriers and ensuring safe and quality execution, stopping work if required to resolve a safety or quality issue
  • In coordination with Team Jansen HSE personnel, ensure contractor safety and environmental plans are developed to Team Jansen standards and adhered to by the contractor
  • Ensure that the contractors work in the next 3 days is planned to the expectations of Team Jansen
  • Verify kitting prepared
  • Confirm quality of JHAs, SOPs, WIPRAs and other documents as required
  • Approve site work permits as required
  • Participate in the critical risk management program as a control owner
  • Help provide coordination between contractor, owner, and other service providers
  • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure alignment and support of the shaft, headframe, and underground scopes
  • Maintain working relationships and regularly update Functional Reps (Engineering, HSEC, Project Services, etc.)
  • Monitor, report, and document contractor and sub-tier contractor construction activities to ensure they are performing adequately to contract requirements
  • Attend site meetings and report/resolve issues when required
  • Attend contractor toolbox talks and host visitors as required.
  • Develops a culture of inclusion and diversity in the contractors
  • Operates day-to-day ensuring that activities are prioritized in line with broader objectives
  • Ensures that they are managing their time effectively and adhering to deadlines

Qualifications

  • Operations / Project Construction / Trade / Geology background or bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Preferred 5 years of relevant experience in mining or construction roles. Experience with potash or underground mining an asset.
  • Ability to work flexibly within the Supervisor team; basic understanding of all disciplines is preferred (i.e., structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation) to be able to cover any portion of the construction.
  • Ability to demonstrate a strong leadership presence in the field.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and construction schedules.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with Contractors, Peers and Supervision.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail, motivation, and commitment to quality outcomes.
  • Ability to make evaluative judgments based on the analysis of factual information.
  • Knowledge of the OH & SA and Mining regulations an asset.
  • Knowledge of MS Office is required
  • SAP knowledge is preferred.
  • Work dayshift and nightshift for a 24-7 construction execution schedule, with flexibility at times to accommodate coverage.
  • Valid Class “G” Driver’s License
