Job Description

UMMARY:

The Chief Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the functional leadership and management of the Bantrel Mechanical Engineering discipline including the hiring, training, and assigning of Mechanical personnel to projects and proposals; salary reviews, training and career development; and the establishment and maintenance of technical standards and work processes for the Mechanical discipline.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

Decisions

  • Sets corporate strategic direction for the Mechanical discipline.
  • Assign discipline personnel to meet project requirements in consultation with the Project Engineering Manager and if required, the Project Manager.
  • Reviews and approves all discipline related project specific Job Instructions and Job hour estimates.
  • Provides overall technical direction for the Mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Represents the Corporation on Mechanical engineering matters on an as required basis.
  • Initiates requests for specialized engineering services, as required.
  • Requests or conducts project Technical Reviews as required.
  • Creates and / or amends discipline specific corporate Engineering Instructions and Design Guides.

Supervision Received

  • Receives direction and supervision from the Manager of Engineering.

Supervision Exercised

  • Provides functional oversight of the Mechanical engineering discipline both on and off project.

Contacts

  • Maintains contact with all other discipline chiefs and department managers.
  • Maintains contact with discipline counterparts in other offices.
  • Maintains contact with Project Managers and Project Engineering Managers.
  • Maintains contact with clients, as required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A recognized degree in engineering from an accredited university; and
  • Licensed professional engineer registered in Ontario; and Progressive discipline engineering work experience, including supervision roles;

SKILL & EXPERIENCE:

  • Twelve plus (12+) years of progressive mechanical engineering experience.
  • Three plus (3+) years as a project discipline lead.
  • Five plus (5+) years’ experience in the mining or mineral processing industry
  • Construction, cross-discipline and/or project engineering experience are desirable.
  • An established and recognized Leader and Manager.
  • Highly proficient technical ability and awareness
  • Good knowledge of industry / regulatory standards, procurement and construction systems and procedures.
  • Strong oral and written communicator.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

1. Administrative

  • Establishes and administers Mechanical discipline goals as part of the annual strategic plan.
  • Administers timesheet and network access approvals, etc. for discipline personnel.
  • Implements corporate personnel policies.

2. Personnel Planning and Career Development

  • Recruiting of discipline personnel for Bantrel.
  • Reviews and implements staffing plans for the discipline by assigning qualified personnel to projects and ensuring an appropriate mix of skills / talents / experience to match project requirements.
  • Determines discipline personnel salary, bonus and promotions in accordance with Bantrel corporate guidelines.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Manages, reviews, and approves performance reviews prepared by line supervisors.
  • Holds career development discussions with all staff personnel.
  • Develops discipline specific training plans to develop both technical and leadership skills for staff personnel.

 

3. Leadership and Communication

  • Sets clear expectations and consequences utilizing the performance-based leadership model.
  • Leads by example.
  • Champions the creation of a work environment which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation and satisfaction.
  • Communicates in a proactive, accurate, positive and timely manner.

4. Planning and scheduling

  • Reviews project execution strategies and engineering plans.
  • Reviews and approves discipline project job hour budgets.
  • Consults with Bantrel project management for specialized Mechanical engineering services on an as required basis.

5. Engineering progress and performance

  • Monitors discipline progress on projects.
  • Provides guidance to project Mechanical discipline leads to improve discipline project performance on an as required basis.
  • Creates and continuously improves measurement systems that measure and predict discipline project performance.

6. Technical Quality, Continuous Improvement, and Innovation

  • Arranges scheduled project Technical Reviews.
  • Provides technical expertise to support to project teams and ensure technical quality.
  • Provides active oversight of project work to nurture a culture of creativity, innovation, and empowerment.
  • Identifies and communicates key discipline specific lessons learned across projects.
  • Encourages technical innovation initiatives.
  • Participates in relevant industry technical conferences and committees.

7. Business Development

  • When requested, assist Business Development in the preparation of project proposals, including the engineering plan, job hour estimates, and scope & schedule development.

8. Other duties

  • Attendance at key Bantrel Corporate and Social Club functions.
  • In consultation with the Engineering Manager, develop and communicate the Chief Mechanical Engineer specific job functions to ensure that all duties covered under this job description are continuously and effectively performed.
  •  Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Engineering.
