Job Description

The Engineering Manager leads all Toronto office Engineering personnel and is a key member of the Management Team that executes Bantrel’s project work. In collaboration with senior and executive leaders, the Engineering Manager supports the planning and execution of the strategic business plan and is responsible for providing leadership at the corporate level as well as the project level and ensures that Bantrel’s goals and objectives are met.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities at the corporate level for the Toronto Office
  • Lead, manage, and functionally support the Toronto departments of Engineering.
  • Work with direct reports to ensure Bantrel has the technical resources to adequately execute projects:
  • General staffing of projects
  • Subject Matter Experts: this is accomplished either internally, or through support from Bechtel Subject Matter Experts, or outside consultants.
  • Work with all direct reports to manage operations personnel (hiring, layoffs, salary and bonus administration, training, and development).
  • Ensure coordination and continuity of work processes, procedures, and resource utilization.
  • Support and encourage the continued innovation and improvement of Bantrel’s processes and procedures.
  • Support and cascade the corporate business plan to all functional groups and ensure functional goals are in alignment with the corporate strategy plus our Vision, Values, and Covenants.
  • Support Client Solutions in the development of business development initiatives, as well as all proposal responses.
  • Provide teams with direction, leadership, and support in terms of annual performance planning.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work culture and champion the Vision, Values and Covenants by leading by example.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to Engineering team.
  • Support the health, safety, and well-being of employees of all functional groups.
  • Responsibilities at the project level for the Toronto Office
  • Define and controls engineering work scope for the project.
  • Assists the discipline leads in developing detailed work plans to support the project execution plan. Detailed work plans include the scope of work, list of deliverables, staffing plans, job-hours budget, and the schedule for each deliverable.
  • Manages and coordinates engineering deliverables and provides inter-discipline coordination for the design and engineering of the project, including weekly technical meetings with action item lists and minutes.
  • Reviews and approves the design documents, trends, change orders, material requisitions, technical portion of bid tabs, engineering studies, quantity take-offs, job-hour forecasts, progress reports and, with concerned disciplines, coordinates resolutions for field-initiated engineering questions on engineering (RFIs).
  • Organizes, assists, and participates in plot plan reviews, PFD reviews, P&ID reviews, HAZOP, 3D model reviews, constructability reviews, value improving practices, client safety and operations reviews of the design work, and the quality checking plan including field checking.
  • Assumes ownership of the project scope, material quantities, engineering job-hour budget, engineering schedule, interface date(s) of procurement schedule and project technical standards.
  • Reviews engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and recommends corrective action to the program manager and program engineering manager, when required.
  • Manages the flow of information between disciplines, procurement, construction, and third parties, to ensure project progress.
  • Ensures availability of all required project materials.
  • Responsible for the engineering budget and Management of Change (MOC) relating to this budget.
  • Establishes and maintains effective lines of communication and provides operational day-to-day leadership over discipline engineering and document management leads.
  • Leads the readiness review before the start of construction and after completion of design.
  • Prepares or recommends project procedures, as required.
  • Maintains contact with the client, process licensor, project/jobsite personnel, sellers, and regulatory Agencies.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in Engineering.  
  • P.Eng. designation is mandatory.
  • Extensive experience in mineral processing with 15 years of experience in a combination of engineering, senior project engineering management, and corporate operations (e.g. Engineering chief’s role), within an Engineering consultancy or EPC organization.  
  • Unquestionable ethics and integrity and a high degree of Emotional Intelligence.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate with Stakeholders including Clients, Senior Leaders, and frontline employees.
  • Clear understanding of regulatory landscape and organizational obstacles.
  • Brings a team-centric approach that is supportive and encouraging.
  • Can manage shifting priorities while maintaining deliverable deadlines.
