Job Description

Hatch and Bantrel have formed the Hatch Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. After successfully completing the Definition Phase Study for the project, the HBJV is currently carrying out the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published TIC of US $5.3-5.7 Billion this will represent one of the largest projects and private investments in Canada. The HBJV will use a hybrid of best-in-class new developing technologies and systems as well as the proven HBJV suite of tools to execute this exciting project. 

The RET - Piping Resident Engineer (PRE) (Piping) will work with the REM (Resident Engineering Manager).  The Piping Resident Engineer will focus on ensuring the relevant aspects of construction meets the piping design intent.  The Piping Resident Engineer shall address piping technical queries and disposition non-conformance reports related to the piping design.

The Piping Resident Engineer shall form the link between the CMT (Construction Management Team) and the Engineers of Record (HBJV) for all piping engineering related work. This shall include interpretation of designs and technical & engineering functional standards and seeking validation as required to support the construction team.

* Please note this position is not eligible for a relocation subsidy or living out allowance. This will be a camp position on a 14 day on 7 day off rotation.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a close link with the main (home) office piping engineering department to give technical support and appropriate services to the CMT (Construction Management Team) in view of reaching technical requirements
  • Interfacing with home office engineers to coordinate design priorities and to ensure site experience is incorporated in the design.
  • Provide clarification on technical requirement indicated on drawings or specifications, explanation on drawing modifications, handling of exemption requests and interference on site
  • Assist piping supervisors to quickly obtain from the Package Engineer, answers to all technical questions (TQ) and exemption requests
  • Ensure reception of required engineering documents in due time
  • Provide approval of piping acceptance certificate
  • Provide piping engineering sketches when required
  • Provide response to information requested by Home Engineering
  • Troubleshoot, design of piping, and any other engineering duties as required.
  • Produce change documents to rectify issues with the engineering design.
  • Assist in evaluating contractor work procedures for compliance with codes and standards.
  • Ensure, along with QA/QC, that piping and equipment is installed as per relevant design code.
  • Responsible for disposition of piping related non-conformance reports (NCRs).
  • Coordinate with the area civil, mechanical and piping superintendents to facilitate construction.
  • Assist in the commissioning of systems on site as required
  • Ensure adherence to and exhibiting Jansen core values
  • Participate in all training as required by BHP
  • Participate in the site risk and control ownership as required

Qualifications

  • BSc/BEng in mechanical engineering
  • A professional Engineering license valid in Province of Saskatchewan (APEGS)
  • Minimum 8 to 12 years of relevant experience within mining and mineral processing related industry, with underground mining considered an asset. or related industries
  • Strong understanding of quality management processes and systems, ISO standards and auditing processes related to major project delivery or program management
  • Functional knowledge of industry leading functional standards and engineering management practices in a multi discipline engineering environment including 3D data centric platforms
  • High attention to detail, motivation, and commitment to quality outcomes.
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the piping engineering discipline
  • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate piping activities between disciplines
  • Sound knowledge of 3D data centric design systems
  • Sound knowledge of AFT Fathom, AFT Impulse
  • Experience designing compressor buildings, and raw water pumphouse building is an asset
  • Experience in the design phase of Jansen JS1 is an asset
  • Sound knowledge of pipe stress calculations for slurry and water operations, and using CAESAR II software.
  • Sound experience generating and updating P&IDs, PFDs and Gas, along with developing specification sheets for slurry/water pumps and pipelines
  • Sound knowledge of engineering management systems
  • Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects
  • Ability to operate effectively and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment utilizing agile methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and quickly comprehend new concepts and technologies
  • Working knowledge of engineering, contracts & procurement, construction, commissioning, project controls, health & safety, environment & community and risk multi-discipline workflows and interactions for large capital projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including functional managers and discipline leads on the project, clients, outside vendors and contractors
  • Demonstrated strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills including root cause analysis training
  • Ability to foster an inclusive environment for their team while grounding to the Jansen core values
  • Ability to communicate effectively across various stakeholder groups
  • Motivates themselves and peers to promote and engage in team building and relationship building activities
