Computing Fellowship: Developer for the FCC computing environment

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

The first stage of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) project envisages e+e- collision at unprecedented luminosities at centre-of-mass energies between the Z pole and the top pair production threshold. A Physics Performance study group has been setup to identify the detector solutions capable to fully exploit the expected integrated luminosity, by throughly investigating a number of benchmark use-cases.

A key component for these studies is the software and computing infrastructure. You will integrate the FCC software team and contribute to complete the infrastructure according to the needs of the community. Your assignements will include working at completing and improving the analysis framework, built around ROOT RDataFrame, in particular, with respect to the handling of algorithms of common interest and the interface with the Monte Carlo production system.

Additional assignments may also include aspects related to handling and interchanging different sub-detector implementations in the simulation infrastructure. You will also work at improving the documentation with realistic examples of usage.

All activities will be carried on in close synergy with the Turnkey Software Stack, key4hep, project.

There are many challenges and opportunities that are bound to match some of your interests and strengths!

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Particle Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or other related field;
  • You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the development, maintenance and documentation of production-level software packages written in C++ and Python;
  • You have an understanding of the data processing workflows of particle physics experiments, in particular for analysis and simulation;
  • You value learning and sharing knowledge with colleagues, following best open-source collaborative practices and egoless programming;
  • Passionate about software development and building and evolving robust, secure, well-tested software components and tools;
  • You enjoy working in a small agile software development team building practical solutions in close collaboration with users and external partners.

Desired skills and experience:

Professional experience in one or more of the following tools would be an asset: analysis tools (ROOT, pyROOT, scikit), detector simulation (Geant4, Fluka), geometry description tools (DD4hep).

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, we offer:

  • An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months. A regular fellowship duration is 24 months.
  • A stipend ranging from 5, 305 to 6, 586 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
