The Chicago Architecture Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing public interest and education in architecture and design. As the 6th largest cultural institution in the City of Chicago, CAF presents a comprehensive program of tours, exhibitions, lectures, special events, and adult and youth education activities, all designed to enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of Chicago’s outstanding architectural legacy. The Education department serves 25,000 people a year through in-person and online Studio programs, a Teen Academy, and the CAF Institute for educators and Architecture, Engineering and Design Professionals.

Job Description

The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Research Intern is passionately curious and detailed oriented. The intern will work alongside talented individuals with deep expertise in architectural history, Chicago and the built environment in a fast-paced leading cultural institution. The Research Intern will be involved with supporting the development of online articles, books, the development of public exhibitions and responding to inquiries from the public with a particular focus on research that supports the celebration of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s 50th anniversary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Director of Research and Interpretation with research and fact checking about diverse topics in the history of architecture, Chicago, and the built environment;
  • Drafting, editing and fact-checking captions, short articles;
  • Drafting and managing email and phone responses to public inquiries;
  • General education program research including teen-program, internships and scholarship opportunities in architecture, art, construction, engineering and design;
  • Administrative support for education department including managing department archives, occasional copying, filing and data entry associated with education programs;
  • Other activities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BA (or MA) history, architecture, design, English or other relevant degree;
  • Excellent written and spoken English;
  • Excellent research skills;
  • Eager interest in the past, present and future of Chicago’s architecture;
  • Accuracy and an eye for detail;
  • Discretion;
  • Well-organized and efficient;
  • Good team player;
  • Flexible and keen to learn new skills.
