Job Description

The Web Editor leads the editorial development process for CAF’s expanding suite of public-facing digital properties, including websites and mobile experiences. This role is crucial in supporting the growth of our digital content program.

Responsibilities

Content Creation and Maintenance

  • Manage creation process for all new web content: page content, feature articles, cross-promotion, event listings, instructional copy
  • Work with Web Producer on proactive daily maintenance of existing website content through CMS tool
  • Work with Web Producer and content creators to collect appropriate photography and graphics to support written content for website and e-communications
  • Ensure all existing and new content is edited to adhere to approved CAF writing guidelines
  • Serve as primary copy editor for all website content
  • Incorporate SEO best practices into the web content development process
  • Assign content creation to designated internal staff and volunteers as necessary
  • Identify and assign content creation to external sources as appropriate in line with budget

Strategy, Planning and Research

  • Work with the Senior Manager of Digital Initiatives and editorial team to develop and manage a monthly organizational editorial calendar (web, social, e-communications, print content)
  • Lead weekly editorial team meetings to review content production schedules, content success metrics and evaluate pitch ideas for future content
  • Stay current on architecture, design, urban planning issues (especially Chicago-centric) in order to guide editorial planning
  • Develop and manage detailed web content plans around major CAF events and initiatives
  • Plan and track strategic cross-promotion of content and offerings across the website
  • Work with editorial team to develop strategies and evaluate content marketing efforts across all CAF digital communication channels (web, social, e-communications)
  • Continue the development and improvement of editorial policies and publishing processes
  • Work with Senior Manager of Digital Initiatives and Director of Marketing Operations to interpret content analytics and make adjustments accordingly to meet audiences’ needs and business goals

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, new media or communications-related field (or equivalent 4 year degree)
  • 5+ years working in an editorial position with both writing and management requirements
  • Experience working in a fast-paced digital publishing environment
  • Experience managing an editorial staff or freelance writers
  • Excellent web writing skills
  • Moderate to advanced experience with web-based content management systems
  • Ability to manage high volume of deadlines
  • Subject matter expertise in architecture, design or urban issues a plus
  • Pays close attention to visual and written details
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, open to accepting and providing feedback
