Job Description

The City of Pittsfield is seeking qualified applicants for the Director of Veteran Services position.  The Director must possess knowledge of Ch. 115, Massachusetts General Laws, as most recently amended, and strive to promote the well-being of the veteran community and to advocate on behalf of the veterans. Responsibilities of the Director include but are not limited to:

 

  • Receive applications for assistance, obtaining proper documentation for favorable action, make proper referrals of applicants to other agencies (federal, state or city)

  • Processing claims for VA hospitalization, medical care, insurance, pension, compensation, burials and any other federal benefits deemed necessary.

  • Organize and direct Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day Activities, as well as all other functions deemed beneficial to veterans.

  • To be appointed Burial Agent for the City in order to maintain accurate records of deceased veterans in our community.

  • Attends meetings/seminars beneficial in the proper disposition of veterans’ claims and meetings of other allied groups.

  • Maintain a cooperative and collaborative relationship with all human service agencies and employers in the community.

Qualifications

The Director must be a Veteran, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. In addition, candidate must have extensive working knowledge to assist, advise, and advocate for veterans and/or their dependents in matters pertaining to federal benefits obtained through the Department of Veterans’ Assistance. Other qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field, along with five (5) years’ related experience. Certification as a Veterans’ Service Officer highly desirable (must obtain this certification within one year of appointment if not already certified).

Additional Information

35 hours per week, Monday-Friday 8:30AM - 4:00PM

Salary: $48,099
