Job Description

The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative tasks for adult HIV patients under the direct supervision of a licensed physician or nurse practitioner.  All administrative functions will be evaluated by the Clinic Manager. Clinical functions will be evaluated by the Clinic Manager in collaboration with the supervising physician(s) for their respective clinics.

KEY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Measure and record vital signs
  • Record patient interview, history and chief complaint
  • Provide patient education with regards to clinic policies, medications, management of diseases, home treatments and special diets
  • Prepare patients for examination and perform routine screening tests
  • Perform phlebotomy and collection of other lab specimens
  • Perform basic lab tests, including rapid tests for HIV
  • Perform EKGs
  • Safely utilize cleaning solvents and related products
  • Provide front desk reception
  • Answer phones and schedule appointments
  • Greet patients, complete registration forms, collect co-pays and provide instructions
  • Maintain medical records utilizing an electronic medical record
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS OR ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of sterile procedures
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment and maintaining quality control standards
  • Knowledge of cleaning specifications of various medical equipment, fixtures, utensils and related materials
  • Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance
  • Skill in communicating with appropriate medical terminology
  • Skill in data entry
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures and protocols for the handling and disposal of hazardous biochemical waste products
  • Ability to use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in emergency situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public
  • Skill in computer use, including data entry
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred
  • Experience caring for HIV infected patients preferred

Qualifications

  • Medical assistant certification from an accredited program
  • Written and oral fluency in English
  • Experience working in a multicultural setting preferred
  • Experience caring for HIV infected patients preferred.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Medical/clinical environment
  • Standing and/or walking for more than eight (8) hours per day
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially infectious materials and includes the use of personal protective equipment. 
  • The employee will be required to wear scrubs.
