Job Description

Position title:

Development Officer, Community Giving

Reporting to:

Associate Director, Community Giving

Description:

The Development Officer, Community Giving, is a self-starter who builds and maintains relationships with legacy and mid-level donors through ‘high-touch’ engagement. The Officer has a keen understanding of environmental issues important to donors and is able to convey how donors’ generosity make a difference.

Other:

The position will be based in Montreal or Vancouver and may require travel once or twice per year.

Responsibilities:

Legacy giving

  • Cultivate, solicit, steward and recognize planned giving donors and prospects, in person, and by phone, email and mail to meet new confirmed expectancy targets
  • Research and implement new strategies to grow confirmed expectancy pool
  • Work with the Development Manager to coordinate mail communication with confirmed and prospective planned giving donors
  • Support donor relations staff to ensure timely administration of planned gifts

Mid-level donor program

  • Cultivate, solicit, steward and recognize mid-level donors and prospects, in person, and by phone, email and mail to meet revenue and renewal rate targets
  • Work with the Annual Giving Officer to support direct mail and email communications with mid-level donors
  • Identify major donor prospects within the mid-level donor portfolio and transition their relationship to the Leadership Giving team

General

  • Coordinate donor recognition events and in person visits with senior staff, as appropriate
  • Find opportunities to incorporate donor outreach in existing activities (e.g., inviting donors to DSF educational events)
  • Develop messaging and materials linking donor support to program goals
  • Maintain and update information and activities in donor database (track responses, detail communications, etc.)
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on program results

Qualifications

Education and experience

  • Minimum two years professional fundraising experience in the not-for-profit sector
  • Strong experience building donor relationships and meeting revenue targets
  • Experience focusing on marketing planned giving options, follow-up with planned giving prospects and securing new legacy gifts
  • Post-secondary Degree/Diploma or equivalent working experience

Skill sets and qualities

  • Knowledge of planned giving technical information (e.g., bequests, gifts of life insurance, gifts of RRSP, etc.) and CRA charitable tax receipting rules an asset
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills
  • Superb written and spoken English; French language skills are highly desired
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook and Raiser’s Edge; experience with Office 365 and/or SharePoint an asset; experience with Salesforce an asset
  • Ability to communicate the values and programs of the David Suzuki Foundation in a way that lets donors understand how their support makes a difference
  • Strong values aligned with DSF’s mission, demonstrated through work or community service
