Job Description

Position Title: Director General, Québec & Atlantic Canada

Terms: Permanent, full-time (4-day week). Some travel, weekend and evening work will be required.

Location: Based at our Montreal Office

Languages: Fully Bilingual in French and English

 About the role:

We are currently looking for a passionate, collaborative, and committed Director General, Québec & Atlantic Canada to head our DSF Montreal Regional Office. 

This is a rare and coveted opportunity for someone like you who knows how to make a significant difference leveraging important partnerships throughout our extensive network of relationships, and working with an amazing team of professionals.

Reporting to the CEO and working with a highly motivated management team and our board of directors, you are responsible for strategic development and management of our Quebec & Atlantic Canada portfolio.

You are responsible for integrating this work within DSF’s national mandate and for delivering a high quality work experience for your team.

Your Responsibilities

  • You are a driving force and a recognized strategic leader and people manager for the long-term success of your region. You know how to build trusting, productive and collaborative teams.
  • You are a relationship builder extraordinaire and know that working effectively and strategically with external key players and diverse coalitions and communities is paramount to the success and impact of this role.
  • You understand the Francophone spirit and are well-connected to a regional network of community constituents, influencers and donors in Quebec & Atlantic Canada to get the job done.
  • You are responsible for national programmatic work, including management of one of our core strategic goals such related to Climate Solutions/zero carbon, Thriving Nature and Sustainable Cities and working with other national project leads to synergize and deliver results.
  • You know how to easily and effectively support the development of your team members’ careers as experts, project leaders, and as public spokespeople. You are used to developing a diverse regional staff team and network of volunteers.
  •  You are a skilled fundraiser and skillfully guide fundraising efforts, build relationship with funders, and develop other revenues necessary to continue our work.
  • You are an experienced spokesperson and media commentator and represent DSF at large public events, conferences and in the regional and national media to enhance and support our work and brand.
  • You excel at Government Relations and effectively advocate, inform and influence public policy and high-level government vision of the environment.
  • You personify good values, judgment, and commitment to social and environmental justice, solid ethics, discretion and being impact-driven in all your dealings.
  • You are skilled at financial and budget management working with your staff and the Board to ensure sound financial management and controls, budget preparation and forecasting.

Qualifications

You have:

Education and Experience

  • Strong knowledge of the Quebec and Canadian political landscape, and social change context of environmental sustainability related work in Canada required.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations and are knowledgeable about and have respect for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). 
  • English and French bilingualism required; other language skills are an asset.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent in experience in a natural, social or political science discipline preferred.
  • 7 to 10 years of progressive leadership experience.
  • Exceptional communicator and can effectively negotiate and inspire internal and external contribution to your team’s work.
