Campaign Manager – Environmental Rights, David Suzuki Foundation

About the role: 

After a very high-profile national tour, and successful engagement of more than 100 municipalities to adopt Right to a Healthy Environment declarations, our environmental rights (Blue Dot) team is embarking on a long-term national campaign. We are looking for an exceptional campaign manager and strategist to guide our work to secure environmental rights through its next phase and beyond. As the Environmental Rights Campaign Manager, you'll work with a diverse, talented team of seven (and a volunteer organizing team of thousands) to rally decision-makers around a new Environmental Bill of Rights and, ultimately, constitutional recognition of the right to a healthy environment. 

Responsibilities 

• Working closely with the Director of Communications and Public Engagement, create a long-term, nimble and adaptive campaign strategy for our environmental rights work.

• Scope, implement and help maintain online and offline systems and tools to proactively develop the leadership and deepen the commitment of our 21,000+ volunteer base.

• Develop regular reporting systems and key performance indicators to evaluate and improve campaign progress.

• Manage and mentor staff in the areas of government relations, communications and digital strategy and community organizing.

• Lead cross-organizational and regional integration of the program. Liaise with and update staff from across DSF to ensure timely and comprehensive internal communication and coordination.

• Maintain excellent project-management systems, and oversee smooth coordination and integration of the campaign team. Manage the Blue Dot department budget; help secure funding opportunities for this work in collaboration with our Leadership Giving team.

• Other duties as required.

You have a strong sense of what it takes to increase public awareness of strategic opportunities for structural change. You have a passion for new forms of organizing, and you care about moving Canada toward a sustainable future.


Education and experience

Extensive expertise with social change campaigns, particularly those with a national grassroots organizing base.

• Demonstrated expertise in data-driven approaches to online public engagement, and using digital tools to support offline engagement.

• Strong familiarity with Canada's political and legal systems.

• Strong project-management abilities; demonstrated expertise in financial management.

• Excellent communication, co-ordination and coaching skills.


Skills and qualities

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including team-building, facilitation and conflict resolution.

• You're a natural problem-solver, and are keen to focus on solutions.

• You are highly conscious of the legacy of Canada's historical relationship with Indigenous peoples and have a strong desire to work toward reconciliation. 

• You have a special knack for creating structures and systems that can support integration, coordination and continued engagement across volunteer and staff teams.

• You have a highly disciplined approach to strategy; you've demonstrated your ability to effectively realize a complex vision with a diverse team. Bonus points if you've already worked with a geographically distributed team or matrix management system.

• You thrive on change, innovation and teamwork.

• You're a self-starter, driven by your own initiative to prioritize competing demands and meet timelines.

• You're committed to rigour and accountability, and comfortable with measurement and data-driven analysis of project outcomes.


Excellent English language skills are critical; French language skills are an important asset.
