$100,000 annually + full benefits package

(Extended health, dental, MSP, RSP etc.)

Hours:

Full time - 34 hours a week, in a four day week

(8.30am – 5.30pm Monday – Thursday)

About the Role:

DSF is looking forward – at this crucial moment, we are excited to bring our public engagement and communications work to the next level through the creation of a Digital and Technology Department. As the founding director of this department, you'll have a unique opportunity to establish the strategies, relationships and processes that can make DSF a leading digital non-profit.

About You:

You will be directly responsible for developing the digital and technology strategies for the Foundation. The Director is a key member of the senior management team, ensuring the integration, alignment and implementation of technology and information systems across the organization to achieve the Foundation’s mission. This role contributes to the development and implementation of DSF’s strategic plan, ensures all policies, programs and initiatives are consistent and supportive of the organization’s mission, vision and values. You will also be responsible for leading a team of approximately 4 people. You love bringing people together around shared challenges. You know how to help people feel enthusiastic about new processes. You have a strong sense of what the public needs from an organization like DSF. You have a passion for digital innovation.


Responsibilities

Strategic leadership and management:

You will be a driving force for envisioning and facilitating DSF’s long term development through the success of your department and in collaboration with the management team, CEO and Board. You demonstrate aligned values, good judgment, solid ethics and appropriate care and discretion in all your dealings.

Digital and Technology performance:

  • Create a long-term, living digital and technology strategy for DSF;
  • Oversee the planning, selection, purchase development and implementation of new information systems and applications for the organization that support the achievement of the Foundation’s objectives;
  • Create and co-ordinate an integrated technology planning process and implementation strategies across all DSF departments;
  • Oversee strategic decision making with respect to technology; regularly convene a cross-organizational Technology Council to advise on and execute strategic decisions;
  • Ensure the effectiveness of DSF web properties; working closely with the Director of Communications and Public Engagement, oversee the redesign of the DSF's primary website, davidsuzuki.org;
  • Ensure that any technical investments are compatible with the strategic technology plan;
  • Manage the implementation of new technologies and processes;
  • Develop appropriate technology resources for DSF, including hardware, software, information management and data storage systems, online platforms, telephony, video conferencing, media production etc.;
  • Manage critical relationships with suppliers, external consultants and vendors to ensure DSF is receiving high quality services;
  • Create and implement a data governance strategy at DSF;
  • Assess how well our technology is meeting our community's needs, both internally and externally; work closely with our Technology, Digital & Communications teams to track user feedback, and improve our performance over time;
  • Oversee and integrate Digital and Technology to ensure our technology evolves to support our vision; scope, recommend and implement new tools to improve our work, as needed;
  • Ensure sufficient support and usability of systems for technology users internally;
  • Ensure the day-to-day operations of the technology infrastructure and systems and minimizes the risk of any discontinuity due to failure of technology systems;
  • Provide oversight and direction in the development and implementation of policies and processes to ensure the quality, accessibility and safeguarding of the organization’s information; 
  • Champion technology risk mitigation and recovery, including developing and maintaining the organization’s continuity plan, Disaster Recovery Plan and Security Strategy;
  • Serve as the organization’s Privacy Officer to ensure compliance with applicable privacy laws and legislation;
  • Lead and inspire the digital and technology team; recruit, coach and train technology and digital staff as needed;
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum 5+ years of experience in:

  • Leading digital and technology engagement teams;
  • Successfully implementing change management processes, particularly involving technology;
  • Data-driven approaches to online public engagement;
  • Strong strategic planning abilities; demonstrated expertise in financial management;
  • Excellent project management and co-ordination skills.

  • You have a highly disciplined approach to strategy; you've demonstrated your ability to effectively realize a complex vision with a diverse team — bonus points if you've already worked with a geographically distributed team or matrix management system;
  • You thrive on change, innovation and teamwork;
  • You're a self-starter, driven by your own initiative to prioritize competing demands and meet timelines;
  • You're committed to rigour and accountability, and comfortable with measurement and data-driven analysis of project outcomes;
  • Excellent English language skills are critical; French language skills are an asset;
  • You take a people-centered approach to technology, prioritizing the user experience, intuitive design, and finding the best tool to empower staff and supporters.
