Job Description

This post is designed for a HCPC registered biomedical scientist to work as part of a laboratory team within Haematology. This role will include utilising Haematology techniques to provide a high level of diagnostic service, supervising less experienced staff and reporting key metrics.

  • To ensure an efficient and effective turn-around time for all results by supporting the management of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical laboratory processes.
  • To supervise junior BMS’s and MLA staff in the department to provide high quality laboratory diagnostic service.
  • To process the specimens received and to undertake the related tasks in the various sections of the laboratory, leading to the reporting and interpretation of results in accordance with agreed policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • To interpret first line laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory policies and procedures. e.g. authorisation of results, ordering relevant follow-up laboratory procedures, adding technical and approved pre-defined clinically relevant comments, referring results for clinical interpretation or opinion, informing the requestor of clinically significant result.
  • To validate the accuracy and appropriateness of reports and ensure they are issued in a timely manner from the section to achieve a positive impact on patient care and management. This includes entering other colleagues’ complex and sensitive results onto the laboratory information management system. Ensure that the outstanding reports are completed and resolve problematic results where possible.
  • Provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, and to refer on to appropriate specialists requests for information out with their area of responsibility.
  • To process and report highly complex and sensitive specimens accurately and efficiently as directed by SOPs using experience and interpretative skills.
  • To process external quality assessment specimens according to SOPs.
  • To process internal quality assurance specimens as instructed by the Quality Manager.
  • To comply with the monthly technical audit as instructed by the Quality Manager.

Qualifications

  • LIBMS, BSc or equivalent
  • Maintains professional competence in biomedical science
  • Has thorough knowledge and understanding of haematology.
  • Experience of assessing performance of staff.
  • Has thorough knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety requirements and procedures.
  • Has understanding of quality assurance procedures.
  • Evidence of using technical experience to assess new and existing systems and processes to innovate and initiate change in laboratory practice.
  • People management- aptitude for managing people.
  • Leadership- able to motivate others, encourage teamwork, delegate and get the best out of people.
  • Communication- able to convey instructions, ideas, and opinions clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Analysis and understanding- able to analyse and evaluate evidence; e.g. in planning, problem solving and decision making
  •  Management of time-able to plan and use own time economically and effectively
  • Has an understanding of and is supportive of research and development
  • Able to communicate with staff at all levels
