The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan educational organization dedicated to building leadership and public policy knowledge within the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. Its mission is to promote APA interests and success in public service careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the APA community, and to serve the APA community at-large.

CAPAL's Federal Internship Program will place undergraduate and graduate students in internships within the federal government in Washington, DC. Opportunities in regional offices, including California, Wisconsin, and Texas, may be possible. Last year, 14 interns were placed in program management, legal, and finance positions. Interns are additionally required to participate in CAPAL's Washington Leadership Program, a weekly summer seminar series, and to implement a Community Action Project with their peers. Each CAPAL intern will be awarded a $3,000 stipend to support the successful completion of their internship program plus a $500 subsidy for travel and relocation. 

These internship positions are open to ALL MAJORS and are suited for individuals looking to gain real-world federal government experience. CAPAL has partnerships with many Federal Agencies including Agricultural Research Services, National Credit Union Administration, and Forest Service. Depending on your interests and placement, intern duties could vary and may include policy or scientific research, project coordination and management, statistics, business, law, communication, and more. Applicants are asked to specify their preferences on the application, and those selected will be placed based on their interests and skills. These internships are suitable for all students interested in government and public policy.

Demonstrated commitment to public service, including service to the Asian Pacific American community; GPA of 3.0 or higher. All current students and all majors are welcome to apply.

Describe your previous educational, community, and professional experiences and how they have influenced your long-term career goals. How will the CAPAL internship advance your goals, and how will you use the experiences and knowledge gained during your summer with a federal agency to better the APA community and your local community? Lastly, please address how you have demonstrated leadership and commitment to cultivating diversity. Please limit your statement to 750 words or less.

Letter of Recommendation: Please attach a scanned and signed recommendation, along with their contact information, of an employer, professor, or equivalent that addresses your leadership skills and your knowledge of your field of study. Early consideration will be given to applications received by Friday, February 14, 2014.
