Job Description


JOB SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Center Manager, this position is responsible for assisting with all types of classroom activities such as providing services in compliance with program guidelines, policies and procedures, implementing developmental assessments, maintaining active supervision of children, assisting teachers with preparing lesson plans, promoting parent participation, and assessing and screening children's learning.

Essential Functions:

A.     Assist with providing comprehensive services for children ages birth to three and/or three to five years of age maintaining the standards of Minnesota Rule 3 Licensing guidelines; OSHA Standards; and all other relevant policies and procedures.  Maintains awareness of the developmental level of all children in the classroom, continually supervising and interacting with children. 

B.     Assists with guiding volunteers in the classroom and facilitates their professional development by modeling, coaching, mentoring, providing opportunities to practice skills, giving constructive feedback, and ensuring that all appropriate standards and guidelines are maintained.

 C.     Assists with designing a safe and attractive learning environment, ensuring above guidelines are met and that active supervision is maintained at all times.  Assist with daily inspection of the center, classroom and playground daily, ensuring that materials are safe and removing or repairing unsafe equipment.  Sanitizes toys daily and evaluates appropriateness of the learning space.  The learning spaces will contain the following defined areas: Indoors:  House/Dramatic Play, Block Area, Art, Toys and Game Area,  Music and Movement Area, Sand and Water Table, Discovery Area, Writing Center, and Library.    Outdoors:  Appropriate supervised space for active play, and age appropriate equipment and materials. 

D. Assists in writing detailed and comprehensive lesson plans which include goals to achieve measurable outcomes in each curriculum area.  The lesson plans will provide a balance of child centered activities and teacher directed plans.  Plans will also include field trips that support the curriculum, appropriate transition activities, health and nutrition lessons, and individualized activities to meet the developmental needs of each child.  To measure the effectiveness of the Lesson Plans and to monitor each child’s development, conducts assessments in the areas of knowledge, language, social/emotional and physical growth.  Observes each child on a regular basis in all areas to establish an Individual Learning Plan (ILP), writing specific goals to achieve measurable outcomes. 

E.     Assists in promoting parent participation in all areas of Four Square by ensuring a clear understanding through: the orientation process, a minimum of two conferences annually, and generating the center’s Parent Newsletter.  

F. Strictly adheres to the highest standards of confidentiality and ethics when working with children, parents and peers. 


Service Coordination                                                                                                            

A.     Assists with coordinating the Four Square classroom environment.

B.     Assist with implementing developmental assessments, child observations, anecdotal records, and other relevant information. 

C.     Assists with maintaining, updating, and appropriate follow through on all paperwork in a timely manner.  This paperwork includes:  daily attendance, monthly reports, health and safety logs, separation log, accident reports, and all mandated reporting documentation of suspected child abuse.   

OTHER FUNCTIONS:                                                                     

A.   Other duties as assigned.  

B. SAFETY:  Responsible for area of supervision and daily enforcement of safety regulations and practices.

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus 12 quarter credits of Early Childhood Education course work and 1 yr experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Perferably enrolled and actively pursuing a CDA, AA or BA in Early Childhood Education within 6 months of hire.


Ability to effectively relate and communicate to people of varying multi-ethnic and socio-economic  backgrounds.

Flexible and willing to work in a team teaching environment.·        

Capable of using good judgment in daily teaching situations, and in interactions with staff, parents and community volunteers.·        

Must successfully complete and pass the criminal background check. 


  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and have the stamina to model best practices in the classroom and act appropriately in an emergency situation.
  • Physically capable of reacting to the demands of active 2-5 year olds.
  • Must possess the stamina and ability to physically model best practices in the classroom.


  • CPR Certification within 90 days of hire
  • First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire


DRIVER’S LICENSE: A valid driver’s license is beneficial. Individuals in a Float position must possess a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation on a daily basis.
