Job Description

GeekGirlCon is looking for an enthusiastic event planner to create and administer fun, educational science-themed events aimed at diverse audiences in the Puget Sound area and beyond via various social media websites. This person must be comfortable developing and hosting events, as well as attending and participating in science-related events sponsored by other entities. A candidate must have a science and/or science education background, science outreach experience, and familiarity with genre programming. This position involves specialty event planning, working with a variety of teams within GeekGirlCon (copy, operations, design, etc.), engaging with the general public offline and online, and representing GeekGirlCon at science-themed events in the Puget Sound area and online.

Duties:

  • Host science-themed events such as “science of…” movie nights, DIY science demo events, Science Café style talks, etc., or arrange for others to host.
  • Research new opportunities to establish science-themed events around Seattle and create a minimum of three events outside the annual Con. Identify great events or marketing opportunities for GeekGirlCon to reach out to new, diverse, and geeky audiences that would come to our convention.
  • Work with Marketing and Social Media to create hype around upcoming events.
  • Work closely with community outreach to participate in events at the EMP, SAM, and with other great partners.
  • Work closely with the Volunteer Program Manager and Director of Operations to ensure that events are staffed, that materials such as the trade show booth and banner, and that everything is returned to storage after the event.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing team to get materials such as promo cards, buttons, merch swag, and prizes for event giveaways.
  • Assist the Manager of the DIY Science Zone in preparation for the primary event of the year – the operation of the Zone at the Con.

Qualifications

  • Outgoing and approachable person who thrives in crowds and purposefully engages with people who seem timid. You fear no social situation!
  • Experience and passion for teaching, and for sharing your love of science with people of all ages.
  • Able to go to 1-2 science related events a month (typically nights and weekends).
  • Self-starter who requires little supervision, but works well with the structure of GeekGirlCon.
