DUTIES:

* Perform a full range of Certified Addiction Counselor duties, in accordance with assignments under the task order and consistent with the scope of practice for profession, including but not limited to, medical care and treatment and patient education in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner.

* Obtain or provide relevant information that will facilitate treatment, assist in developing programs, and service delivery relating to the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP).

* Conduct comprehensive substance abuse screening/assessments with patients seeking an evaluation voluntarily, or at the direction of their commands, the court, medical, or other referral sources using medical and psychological evaluation to establish individually suitable treatment programs. Compose and forward to commands written correspondence defining evaluation and recommendations. Writes case histories and discharge summaries.

* Provide assessment of substance abuse and addiction. Conduct treatment intakes and develops individual treatment plans. Provide individual and group counseling for clients with substance abuse issues. Identify and document medical consequences of alcohol and other substance use, including withdrawal and detoxification.

* Facilitate the placement and management of patients in appropriate levels of care within the continuum of care model of the treatment of addictive disorders. Perform case management, including referral assistance for patients with problems other than substance abuse. Delegate tasks and duties in the clinical direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care, and clinic activities.

* Provide technical guidance to administrative personnel. Maintain records, reports, correspondence, and files, required by local directives and current instructions. Participate in the SARP outreach program. Maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers.

Qualifications

* Education: Must possess one of the following: 1) Obtain an Associate of Arts degree in a behavioral science with specialized training in substance abuse and chemical dependency treatment. OR 2) Completion of the Navy Drug and Alcohol Counselor School (NDACS) that leads to Navy Certification as Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor.

* Licensure/Certification: Must possess one of the following: 1) Possess and maintain a current, unrestricted license OR certification as an Alcoholism and/or Drug Abuse Counselor in any one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands.  2) Possess and maintain a National Certification Credential by one of the following: The National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors OR the National Board of Certified Counselors OR the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium/ Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse OR the Navy Drug and Alcohol Program Management Activity.  3) Maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) by the American Heart Association.

* Experience: Possess a minimum of 1 year full-time (40 hours per week) experience within the preceding 3 years as a Substance Abuse Counselor in a Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program which includes male and female clients.

* Must be a U.S citizen and have the ability to pass a Background Check/Security Clearance.

Additional Information

STAFFING & SCHEDULING:

* Services will be provided at the Psychological Health/Traumatic Brain Injury (PH/TBI) Clinic, Naval Branch Health Clinic (NBHC), Groton, CT.  

* Usual duty schedule is an 8-hour shift between the hours of 0730 – 1600 Monday - Friday, to include an uncompensated half hour lunch. Work hours may be modified based on the needs of the assigned area.
