BOOKSTORE ASSISTANT MANAGER
POSITION SUMMARY:
Assists the Bookstore Manager in the daily operations. Daily duties will include management functions, opening/closing store, overseeing production/retail operations, ensure staff follows all policies and procedures, and assists in training of new staff.

1.Follows and enforces basic cash handling practices as specified in GISD's Cash Handling Procedures.
2.Ensures that all staff provide customer service covering all aspects of the business including handling donations, document destruction materials as well as dealing with book inquiries, identifying customer needs and offering advice when appropriate. Addresses customer complaints quickly, politely and knows when to refer them to upper management for appropriate resolve.
3.Ensures that all books are sorted/shelved accurately as well as in a timely manner. Oversees section pulls of stale/slow-to-sell book titles and merchandise. Keeping the store well-stocked with fresh merchandise at all times.
4.Ensures that the store is meeting required store production/shelving goals on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Provides oversight for the store's weekly team goals and offers guidance, instruction and team leadership to the staff.
5.Able to identify and train staff on store appropriate goods, strong selling items as well as "hot" and "new release" books/products for the store.
6.Able to prices books and other merchandise in accordance with established best pricing practices -- i.e., good, better, best, etc. Capable of training staff to do the same.
7.Store merchandising: ensures that window and in-store displays are full and visually appealing at all times.
8.Inventory stock and give recommendations for reorder when inventory of supplies drop below acceptable levels ensuring that supplies needed to keep the store running are always on hand.
9.Promotes and demonstrates cooperation and teamwork. Assists and shares knowledge and information with other employees as needed. Helps train any new or temporary personnel that may help fill in for any position.
10.Operates and navigates various online programs, websites and email programs including bibliographic work to identify and locate titles; this involves electronic searches using a computer.
11.Ensure that store operations are achieved in an efficient, safe and clean manner. May assist in other housekeeping duties, including mopping/sweeping floors and taking out trash if necessary.
12.Report accidents, injuries, and unsafe work conditions to HR & upper management; completes all assigned safety training and certifications.
13.Safeguard company property, including donated goods and Document Destruction materials. Report any incidents of theft or unauthorized possession of company property to management immediately.
14.In the absence of other management assumes all daily responsibilities.
15.Prepares daily assignment log for  staff and assigns breaks/lunches daily according to management direction.
16.Ensures that all staff check in and out for each break, that bag checks are done upon entrance and staff attend huddle/exercises.
17.Addresses and informs management of any issues concerning store employee performance and/or behavior, immediately documents all concerns, incidents, etc.
18.Performs management administrative responsibilities such as drafting performance appraisals, reviews, corrective action and training documentation of employees in a timely manner.
19.Training, motivating, and coaching all employees. Helps train any new or temporary personnel that may help fill in for any position within the store.
20.Opens and closes store, including all duties essential to securing the store for both open and closing. Secures store assets and completes all related daily paperwork. Makes bank deposits when needed in a safe and timely manner.
21.Handles and routes incoming Bookstore, Donations and Document Destruction customer inquiries on a daily basis.
22.Works with staff and Document Destruction to ensure pickups are completed, security procedures are followed, security checks are completed and confidentiality is maintained at all times.
23.Ensures that all staff are accepting donations and Document Destruction materials with established GISD record keeping procedures including filling out all necessary paperwork accurately and correctly.
24.Ensures the interior and the exterior of the donations acceptance area in a clean and organized manner.
25.Ensure that all staff safely handle CRT/electronic donations and donation receipts according to and in compliance of all GISD, state and federal guidelines.
26.Perform other related duties as assigned. May be required to work at alternate store locations as needed.
27.Assists in preparing topics for staff huddles and sub-departmental meetings at the direction of Management.

BOOKSTORE MANAGER
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of Goodwill Industries of San Diego County's standalone Bookstore locations. Responsible for the maintaining, oversight and compliance of the Bookstore, Donation Center and Document Destruction Drop-Off Center.  Directly supervises sales, merchandising, donations, customer service standards, staff production, attendance, performance related issues and all other daily aspects associated with the running of the business.

Duties include management functions such as safety and loss prevention compliance, opening/closing, scheduling, controlling hours and overtime, overseeing production, administrative paperwork and ensuring all employees receive training and follow all policies and procedures. This position encompasses a wide variety of functions related to bookselling including a strong knowledge of books, book formats, categories, authors, and publishers.

1.Responsible for monitoring the day-to-day management of the store including payroll needs, budget concerns, staffing issues and operational needs. Prepares and presents all necessary performance appraisals, reviews, corrective action, termination packages/recommendations.
2.Provides strong leadership.
3.Completes store scheduling as per budgeted hours/store needs, controls labor to revenue, and follows up on work results.
4.Informs Book Operations Manager of any deviation of tasks associated with Supervisors and Assistant Managers' job descriptions.
5.Oversees maintenance of premises at store.
6.Analysis of store's performance and communicates/completes necessary action as needed.
7.Ensures quality customer service and good customer/donors relations are provided. Identifies current and future customer requirements by establishing rapport with potential and actual customers.
8.Oversees the timeliness and accuracy of bank deposits.
9.Ensures reports are completed and transmitted in an accurate and timely manner.
10.Responds to all customer inquiries and complaints in a timely and courteous manner. Follows up regarding the outcome of complaint.
11.Enforces safety and loss prevention policies and procedures. Protects employees and customers by providing a safe and clean environment.
12.Ensures the appropriate amount of supplies are maintained and ordered as necessary.
13.Maintains operations by enforcing operational, organizational, and personnel Policies and Procedures.
14.Provides training and professional development to store staff. Guides direct reports by providing development plans and assignment while giving ongoing feedback.
15.Monitors sales activities to ensure that customers receive satisfactory service and quality goods.
16.Maintains the stability and reputation of the store by complying with legal requirements.
17.Inventory stock/re-orders when inventory drops to specified levels.
18.Ensures pricing and quality standards for profitability.
19.Responsible for maintaining store merchandise safe, in orderly fashion, and appropriately displayed.
20.Documents and reports any concerns or issues in a prompt and timely manner.
21.Completes Target Solution trainings in a timely manner.
22.Performs Administrative responsibilities as assigned including those items not only pertaining to the running of a retail store, Donations and Document Destruction Drop-Off Center.
23.Reviews P&L's for profitability rations and controls costs throughout the year.
24.Maintains store staff by recruiting, interviewing and recommending hiring.
25.Recommends terminations and fills out the necessary paperwork associated with the recommendation. Conducts termination meetings, when approved.
26.Responsible for reviewing GISD policies and procedures on the GISD web site to continuously be informed of current, new or changes in our policies and procedures.
27.Supports the Book Operations Manager and Regional Manager in providing ideas and organizing promotional events for the bookstore.

Qualifications

Bookstore Assistant Manager

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Education /Experience: Associates Degree (two-year college or technical school) preferred or minimum two years related experience.

Computer Skills: Basic use of computer and computer related equipment/software. MS Office Suite -- Word and Excel programs.

Certificates & Licenses:  Able to be NAID certified. Must have valid California Driver's License with driving record acceptable to Goodwill's insurance company's standards.

Equipment: Must be able to operate various computer controlled, job specific equipment including void fill machinery, labeling equipment, POS cash register, etc.

Other Requirements: Must be able to understand the basic principles of running a retail store: stocking, merchandise flow, quotas. Cash handling: Able to perform simple arithmetic tasks including addition, subtraction, fractions, percentages, calculate figures/amounts for change or discounts, etc.


Bookstore Manager

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)and/or Associate's degree/2 years of college/technical school preferred.

Experience: Two to five years related experience. Must have supervisory experience.

Computer Skills: Email, internet use, Microsoft word and Excel.

Certificates & Licenses: Able to be NAID certified. Must have valid California Driver's License with driving record acceptable to Goodwill's insurance company's standards.

Other Requirements: Able to perform simple arithmetic tasks including addition, subtraction, fractions, percentages, calculate figures/amounts for change or discounts, etc. Must be able to read and understand sales reports. Must be able to travel for business when the department or company needs call for it.



Additional Information

Bookstore Manager starts at $17/hr.; Bookstore Assistant Manager starts at $14/hr.
