Job Description

Provides one-on-one assistance to Deaf and hard-of-hearing participants to resolve daily living issues that result from hearing loss and helps the Deaf and hard-of-hearing attain the highest level of independence. Acts as a community liaison delivering educational presentations, materials and information regarding hearing loss challenges; and contribute to the mission of Goodwill by maximizing the opportunities for participants who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing; making decisions based on conclusions for which there is little precedent.

Salary: $ 13.96/hour 

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Implement programs for the Deaf and hard-of hearing to help them achieve independence and a high quality of life.

2. Provide participants with support in developing individual and family coping skills related to deafness.

3. Provide ongoing assistance and help develop life skills to encourage independent living for Deaf persons who need support navigating daily communication challenges (e.g., reading and understanding documents, writing letters to help express specific needs to providers, communicating with medical, legal and educational providers, potential employers, and other public accommodation providers).

4. Conduct training programs for participants, community service providers and general public.

5. Create and develop awareness of agency services provided through in-house activities and externally as an active participant in local human service, professional and civic organizations.

6. Proactively seek new participants/families from the Deaf community to ensure widespread awareness of agency’s offerings and services.

7. Actively participate in community events and deliver presentations regarding Deaf Advocacy to clubs, associations, and organizations.

8. Apply understanding of ADA law to proactively advocate for participants in need of and/or being denied public accommodations or other rights or entitlements of those with hearing loss.

9. Keep careful daily logs, comprehensive reports and detailed case management files for all persons served.

10. Provide assistance with other general department activities.

1. Demonstrate by words and actions a commitment to the Goodwill mission to help people with disabilities and other barriers to become self-sufficient, working members of the community.

2. Perform or assist with any duties or operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.

3. Maintain safe work area and comply with safety procedures and equipment operating rules, keeping work area in a clean and orderly condition.

4. Participate in any variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.

Job Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

1. Associate’s degree with two years of related experience required; Bachelor’s degree with three years of related experience preferred. Experience can be substituted for education.

2. Fluency in American Sign Language

3. Strong understanding of ADA, EEOC, and other laws protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities

4. Assertiveness as advocate in applying knowledge of laws protecting the rights of those with hearing loss

5. Ability to work well with both Deaf and hard of hearing participants

6. Strong knowledge/understanding of deafness related issues (e.g., daily challenges).

7. Strong networking skills

8. Ability to multitask

9. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

10. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license, valid insurance, reliable transportation for travel to outlying locations and the ability to be insured under the company’s vehicle insurance policy
