Job Description

IDEO.org is seeking a Challenge Manager to support the Amplify program, a partnership with the UK Department for International Development that aims to transform international development through collaboration and human-centered design. The Challenge Manager will be responsible for driving the online collaborative design process on OpenIDEO.com, in pursuit of identifying and shepherding innovative ideas for funding and implementation. We are looking for someone who demonstrates a clear understanding of the international development landscape, possesses a fluency in using new media for social impact, and has cultivated a solid network of experts and partners in international development.

Individuals who will flourish in this role are self-starters possessing deep skills in research, synthesis, and analysis, with a particular emphasis on listening and learning from a broad community, both online and offline. We also seek a candidate with rich project management experience and topflight writing skills. This role is based in San Francisco, CA.

Position Responsibilities

  • Guide the Amplify online collaborative design process on OpenIDEO.com, including analyzing and synthesizing learnings from content submitted to the online platform
  • Project manage all aspects of Amplify online challenges, including managing challenge timelines, overseeing and participating in online community management, and coordinating integration of offline activities into online challenges 
  • Broaden participation of individuals and organization not currently represented in the Amplify program, including implementing organizations in the international development field and a broad cross section of non-traditional actors
  • Develop targeted written content for Amplify challenges (suitable for both internal and external audiences), including challenge briefs, synthesis documents, and Amplify blog posts
  • Deliver high-touch customer service to members of the online community
  • Assist in leading workshops 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3+ years of experience in international development, with a background that reflects a healthy balance of direct experience in implementation and formal education in the sector
  • Strong writing and direct communication skills for multiple audiences
  • Extensive experience with online platforms; background in journalism or new media is a plus
  • Unfaltering and exemplary time and project management skills
  • Excellent presentation, workshop, and meeting facilitation skills
  • Ability to work and collaborate with cross-cutting teams across multiple organizations (i.e. IDEO.org, OpenIDEO, DFID)
  • Appetite for both quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Design sensitivities and working knowledge of human-centered design, particularly as applied in international development contexts
