Job Description

IDEO.org is at a critical juncture in its organizational development. Since launching in 2011, we’ve grown to become a $15M organization, attracting diverse sources of funding and a wide range of partnerships. We’ve built a strong foundation of financial systems, processes, and controls,and we’re looking for an entrepreneurial Director of Finance that can maintain this foundation, while building strong systems that move IDEO.org into a paradigm of proactive and distributed financial management to position us for continued financial health and growth. 

You’ll confidently serve as a strategic steward of all of IDEO.org’s financial resources and oversee all fiscal responsibilities at the organization, in partnership with IDEO.org’s Leadership Team and Board of Directors.You’ll drive everything from an effective and inclusive budgeting process and a clean audit to pristine external reporting to our partners and funders. You’ll create a rhythm of monthly financial reconciliation, reflection, and reporting to our internal stakeholders, and you’ll create the tools and systems our teams need to better understand and manage their budgets and make financial decisions. You’ll hold a vision for IDEO.org’s financial future based on the ways in which we might grow, and you’ll ensure we mitigate risks and seize opportunities along the way. And, importantly, you’ll do this all through a lens of amplifying our impact, protecting our creative culture, and sustaining the health and wellbeing of our team.

Areas of Responsibility:

General Accounting

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and our various partners’ requirements
  • Oversee monthly closing of books
  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls and financial policies to eliminate risks and ensure responsible stewardship of IDEO.org’s resources
  • Drive critical annual activities, including audits and tax filings 

Financial Analysis and Reporting

  • Prepare and present key financial information to the Board of Directors on a quarterly basis (balance sheet, financial projections, income statements, cash flow analyses, etc.) 
  • Drive IDEO.org’s Finance and Audit Committees, ensuring they have the information they need to oversee and improve the organization’s near- and long-term financial health 
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for internal teams to support effective program management, including appropriate talent allocations
  • Ensure high quality, on-time financial reporting to IDEO.org’s partners, including as-needed reports on the use of grant funds 
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting

Budgeting and Planning

  • Drive a cross-functional annual budgeting process with the Leadership Team and Board to ensure effective planning and a budget that reflects IDEO.org’s strategic priorities
  • Partner with program teams to assess the financial viability of new opportunities and develop budget proposals to adequately resource against these opportunities
  • Create as-needed financial models that help various team members bring a financial lens to critical decisions

Administration

  • Strategically lead the continuous growth and development of the finance function through an annual goal-setting process 
  • Oversee, support, and foster the growth of other Finance Team members
  • Manage relationships with bank, creditors, and other vendors as needed
  • Partner with leaders of other core functions (e.g., Operations, Talent, and Fundraising) to strengthen internal systems and processes that connect to financial operations, such as employee policies
  • Ensure organizational compliance with relevant Local, State, and Federal agencies


Qualifications

You are a finance leader with a demonstrated track record of building and leading the finance function within a rapidly growing organization. You understand the intricacies of finance and accounting in the social sector – ideally with an organization that has varied sources of funding (public, private, fee-for-service, etc.). You lead with empathy when stewarding financial decisions, driving financial systems and processes into the organization, and when working with your colleagues. You take the utmost pride in managing and nailing the details, yet you’re comfortable using the back of the napkin to keep things moving when it is needed. You manage the heck out of risks. You relentlessly pursue smart financial decisions that balance the health of the organization, its strategy, impact, people, culture, and sustainability, and you’re passionate about spreading your love for smart financial decisions by empowering others with knowledge, information, and tools. You’re curious about how finance shows up in a design-led, creative, and emergent organization. 


Strong qualifications, including:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience as a finance leader, with a track-record of collaborating with cross-functional teams to deploy your accounting and finance skills to advance the organization’s efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability
  • Significant experience with nonprofit accounting and financial analysis, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial concepts and information to a range of stakeholders
  • Flexible and generative approach to problem solving
  • Proven team builder with the skills and mindset to help everyone around you stay inspired, do their best work, and grow
  • Comfort navigating and thriving in a fluid, rapidly growing organization 
  • Experience with critical finance and nonprofit management systems, including or similar to Quickbooks, Salesforce, Expensify, and Paychex 
  • CPA Preferred
