Senior Digital Communications Designer

  • Full-time

Company Description

IDEO.org improves the lives of poor and vulnerable communities through design. To effect that change, we work directly with foundations, nonprofits, and social enterprises; create tools and resources that teach human-centered design; and influence the social sector with stories of human-centered design in action. IDEO.org works directly with organizations across a range of focus areas including health, financial services, gender equity, education, and agriculture.

Job Description

IDEO.org has an opportunity for an experienced Digital Communications Designer to join a dynamic project in our New York City studio through September 2017. As part of a multi-disciplinary design team, you’ll tackle complex, poverty-related challenges alongside other builders and thinkers from various backgrounds.

IDEO.org is partnering with a leading financial insitution on a $4.8 million, 18-month program to develop digital tools to help low-income Americans understand and improve their financial health. The program will collaborate and fund a range of community-based organizations to develop, deploy and implement these tools, which will be open source and available for any to use.

This role offers the opportunity to design new digital experiences and interactions to drive healthier behaviors around money, to educate and demystify finance, and to empower people to take control of their financial life. Through deep immersion in the everyday lives of low-income people, the team is generating insights about possible interventions and is in the midst of turning them into prototypes, experiments, and digital tools. We are looking for a skilled designer who can quickly design interventions which are effective, impactful and targeted to their audience.

Qualifications

Once you are here you will:

  • Connect insights to design and collaborate with teammates to create digital communications assets and experiments to improve the financial health and mobility of low-income Americans
  • Translate the team's top ideas into fast, low fidelity experiments and prototypes meant to quickly test our assumptions
  • Design communications campaigns, digital engagement techniques, and ads
  • Produce community building platforms and user interfaces
  • Work with nonprofit implementation partners to understand their needs and the needs of their constituencies, creating contextually appropriate digital experiences which make sense in their context
  • Plan, prioritize, coordinate, and conduct user research of different designs to gather feedback to evaluate experiments and make recommendations for improvement and iteration
  • Effectively communicate research findings, conceptual ideas, detailed design, and design rationale both verbally and visually
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, partnerships experts and design thinkers

You have:

  • A minimum of 5 to 8 years of experience as a communication designer or as an interaction designer

  • No matter your role, you love getting your hands dirty in the design process and can quickly create elegant digital experiences

  • Experience with human centered design, and an understanding of how to turn human behavior and needs into real concepts

  • You are a systems thinker; you love solving big, hairy problems and can logically visualize complex systems, user interaction flows and beautiful user interfaces

  • You are agile; you can nurture a cohesive product vision and finesse visual designs at a vector and pixel level

  • A demonstrated interest in the areas of poverty, impact, financial health and inclusion and have previously worked with vulnerable communities

  • You value the impact of large-scale work and its power to create meaningful change and are obsessed with what design and technology can do for people
