Inmarsat’s Chief Technology Office (CTO) business unit sits at the core of our business and focuses on innovative technology development and engineering. The CTO maintains a centre of excellence for technology and broader infrastructure-related innovation, translating market needs into core expansion programmes to enable market development. We ensure that Inmarsat’s products and services are constantly pushing the boundaries of satellite communications.  The CTO team is responsible for delivering Inmarsat development programmes, including satellites and launchers, ground infrastructure (ground stations, networks, user terminals and access technology), regulatory, market access and product and service development. 

Job Description

Primary Purpose of Role:

In the frame of procurement of its new satellite generation, Inmarsat is looking for an experienced Payload engineer to join the resident team in the manufacturer facilities. Flexibility to travel to supplier’s locations (mainly US, but also Europe) is required in order to ensure the successful delivery of payload equipment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the successful in-orbit delivery of future satellites. The purpose of the role is to follow-up contracts with the satellite manufacturer and payload suppliers, focusing mainly on the development, design, manufacturing, testing and in-orbit operations of payload systems.

The position will involve monitoring, reporting and guaranteeing high quality standards on the delivery of satellite payload subsystems and related hardware and software.

This new program is essential to Inmarsat's development of its Global Express offer and we are looking for self-motivated individuals to provide expert guidance and leadership with regards to all aspects of advanced satellite communications payload engineering

Key Responsibilities:

The incumbent will provide oversight for the communications payload activities from design to integration and test on satellite. The successful candidate will join our on-site resident team.

The incumbent’s primary tasks shall be the review, assessment and recommendation of supplier data through the design and technology development phase.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Guaranteeing compliant delivery of flexible payloads (mainly processors, Multi-Port-Amplifiers (MPAs), multi-spot antennas for mobile missions)
  • Following and supporting all program phases from design, development, manufacturing, testing and operations
  • Participating and contributing to satellite development reviews and test campaigns to ensure that Inmarsat’s requirements are fulfilled
  • Managing the contractor for timely resolution on communications subsystem technical problems
  • Identifying and monitoring of critical areas throughout the design, construction and test phases of the satellites’ payloads and safeguarding Inmarsat interests in case of technical or programmatic issues arising during each phase of the antenna product lifecycle.
  • Supporting system CONOPs definition and implementation
  • Supporting the London based operational team as required 
  • Providing timely reporting to management for critical and routine activities

 

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • At least 6 years’ experience in communications payload design, manufacture and test from equipment level through to spacecraft level.
  • Master's degree in a related technical field (i.e. astrophysics, aerospace, engineering, physics, etc.). Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • Solid experience in payload design, particular emphasis on mobile oriented communications payload technology and related operations: flexible payloads supporting dynamic bandwidth and power allocation in multi-spot architectures.
  • In-depth understanding and hands-on experience for the testing of communications equipment, communications payloads and spacecraft
  • In depth knowledge of all technologies associated Digital Payload processors and MPAs
  • In depth knowledge of in-band TTC and encryption
  • Good knowledge of requirements drivers for LEO, MEO and GEO payloads, both environmentally (design, production and acceptance) and operationally (CONOPs).
  • The ability to discuss and contribute to the mechanical and thermal aspects
  • Payload and RF Hardware experience (unit level, technologies, quality and anomaly process, etc.), as well as Antenna design knowledge will be a bonus
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills
  • Excellent communication skills with people at all levels of the organization
  • Acts within her or his circle of competence and knows the boundary
  • Teamwork

 Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Good knowledge and understanding of satellite design, assembly integration & test
  • Good knowledge of Inmarsat business, and Mobile communication environment
  • Objective, rational and multidisciplinary thinking
