The Instituto Justice & Leadership Academies (IJLA), a Social Justice, Multi-site, Charter High School will expand opportunities available to our youth. The main campus, Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy (RLLA) is located in Pilsen/Little Village, one of Chicago's predominantly Mexican communities. IJLA will open 2 more campuses in the next few years. This model serves students that have not found success in a traditional 4 year program. It is a three-year program serving youth 17-21. Many of our students come from Chicago Public Schools seeking understanding, excitement and renewed opportunities to learn and earn their high school diploma.

In addition to our current campus, the Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy, IJLA will open a second campus next year and has opportunities for the following teachers to join our staff. A commitment to social justice will be required.

Job Description

The Special Education Teacher provides instruction and instructional support as dictated by IEP’s and Federal mandates. Communicate with students and parents about students’ Individualized Education Plan (IEP) as required by Federal Law, NCLB and other mandates. Provide instructional minutes as mandated by the IEP. Collaborate and co-teach with general education teachers to ensure academic proficiency for each student in Special Education to be achieved through curriculum.




  • Maintain accurate and complete IEP’s, student records, and prepare reports on children and activities, as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.  Responsible for all compliance components and audits
  • Monitoring and responding to student grades, specially designed instruction and progress monitoring results.
  • Providing strategic, pull out instruction for students that increases student skill and content knowledge
  • Developing effective IEPs that translate into measurable results for students
  • Teach students self regulation, organization skills, and socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
  • Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and professionals to develop individual educational plans designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social development.
  • Instruct through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations in one or more subjects such as English, Mathematics, or Social Studies.
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of handicapping conditions.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for special-needs students, based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
  • Confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems.
  • Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress, and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs.
  • Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests.
  • Coordinate placement of students with special needs into mainstream classes.
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Monitor teachers and teacher assistants to ensure that they adhere to inclusive special education program requirements.
  • Meet with parents and guardians to provide guidance in using community resources, and to teach skills for dealing with students' impairments.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Administer standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine students' strengths and areas of need.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of secondary school programs.
  • Maintain up-to-date on changing teaching methods and progressive techniques by attending training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
  • Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Attend staff meetings, and serve on committees as required.
  • Perform additional duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading as needed
  • Provide assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms.
  • Visit schools to tutor students with sensory impairments, and to consult with teachers regarding students' special needs.
  • Provide interpretation and transcription of regular classroom materials through Braille and sign language.
  • Sponsor extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
  • Other duties as assigned


• Bachelors in Education or other related Field

• Type 9 or 10 ISBE Certificate with LBSI Endorsement

• Type 73 ISBE Certificate, preferred

• Two years’ experience in the field of Special Education

• Bilingual: Spanish/English preferred

• Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality

• Ability to work with a wide variety of people

• Team player and willing to take on multiple tasks at once and independent worker, requires minimal supervision

• Exceptional organization and time management skills

• Above average “customer” service attitude

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Strong telephone skills and ability to maintain composure under pressure

• Dependable and punctual

• Strong project management skills, attention to detail and effective management of multiple projects at one time

• Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges

• Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet
