Interlochen Center for the Arts, one of America’s most prestigious institutions for arts education, performance and fine arts is seeking to hire a Second Semester Artist-in-Residence Instructor of Photography/Digital Arts. This position would commence January 19, 2015 and end May 31, 2015.

An average of three hours a day of college-level studio instruction in black and white film photography and digital arts to talented and highly motivated high school art students. Duties include supervision of the darkroom, lighting studio and digital lab, one evening per week in open tutorial session and monitoring visual arts studios, departmental service and assistance with specialized Wednesday programming, assistance with preparation of exhibitions, and other work appropriate to the Academy's mission.

Interlochen comprises a unique portfolio that includes: the first and foremost summer arts camp, the nation’s premier fine arts boarding high school, a year-round arts festival that presents more than 600 events, two public radio stations (news and classical music), and a series of arts education programs for adults. Students split their time between college preparatory academic courses and their art specialty:  Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Dance, Motion Picture Arts, or Visual Arts. 

The Visual Arts Department develops a student's capacity for expression through a correlation between the visual arts and an awareness of the student’s broader environment. Interlochen’s location, expansive two-hour studios, in-depth critiques, rigorous academics, visits from professional artists, integration between departments and cultural trips to major metropolitan areas support this unique environment.

Studios are structured to begin with the foundations needed to promote artistic growth within the specific studio. After the foundations are covered, studio instruction and assignments are designed for more individualized direction. The program promotes the development of fundamental skills, knowledge of art principles, visual interpretation, innovative thinking and the development of a personalized artistic voice. The building of more personalized direction is supported by cross-disciplinary interaction between studios and departments on campus. Participation in individual and group critiques and research noted in sketchbooks are assessment tools used in addition to the class assignment grades.

Studio areas offered in the Visual Arts Department include: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Black and White Darkroom Photography, Digital Arts, Sculpture (plaster, wood, welding, etc.), Metalsmithing, Ceramics, Fibers (Soft Sculpture and Surface Design), New Genres, Curatorial Practices and Art History.

• An MA or MFA in any two-dimensional studio art area is desired. 
• The successful candidate should have a strong background in teaching darkroom photography and digital media.
• Candidate must possess expertise in multiple darkroom processes and have knowledge of 35mm, medium and large format cameras.
• Technical knowledge should include mastery of Adobe Creative Suite 5.5.
• Knowledge in web design is preferred, but not required.
• The candidate should have a broad understanding of studio art practice and be knowledgeable of contemporary art issues and theory.
• Experience using technology in the classroom is expected as is a strong interest and willingness to collaborate with colleagues both inside and outside the Visual Arts department. 
• The ability to work successfully with highly creative students with diverse learning styles is important.  

Compensation and Benefits: 

The Artist-in-Residence are provided with benefits, meals, one-bedroom apartment and a stipend for the semester.
