Job Description

Interlochen Center for the Arts, one of America’s most prestigious institutions for arts education, performance and fine arts is seeking to hire a third shift part time Campus Safety Supervisor. This position can work up to 28 hours per week and will be working third shift 11:00pm to 7:00am. A Campus Safety Supervisor provides a variety of security, safety, a high level of customer service and service functions to our campus community on a 24/7 basis. Under the direction of the Campus Safety Director and Campus Safety Sergeant’s this position will supervise subordinate staff and perform duties related to overseeing the maintenance of campus safety; supervises safety officers and other safety staff; monitors and supervises day-to-day safety operations and activities; ensures the enforcement of ICA rules, regulations and legal infractions concerning the protection of persons and property; assists with the coordination of campus emergency response activities as needed; develops, conducts and coordinates staff training activities; coordinates investigative activities; and performs related work as assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Supervises assigned subordinate officers. Assigns, directs, and trains staff regarding their assignments.

  • Monitors and evaluates work performance; initiates corrective actions and/or disciplinary procedures if necessary; establishes and determines day-to-day shift priorities.   

  • Supervises and directs department activities related to facility safety, emergency response, parking and traffic control, crime and fire prevention, oversees the issuance of parking placards, creates visitor badges and manages visitor list and entry gates. 

  • Receives and investigates complaints related to security activities. 

  • Reviews and monitors security logs and events; identifies issues and reports on trends and problem areas; develops, recommends and implements methods of reducing issues as well as property loss/damage.  

  • Monitors ongoing campus security issues; responds to requests for assistance; provides initial response as needed, coordinates communication with internal and/or external agencies as necessary.  

  • Receives and investigates reports of suspicious people or activities on campus property.  

  • Oversees and coordinates security at large campus events

  • Supervises and coordinates security activities related to the protection of visiting guests and guest artists. Oversees the operation of alarm systems and day pass machines; coordinates the troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of the systems and equipment. 

  • Attends meetings, conferences and trainings as assigned; may participate on task forces and committees. 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Respond to routine and emergency calls for service

  • Provide safety during severe weather

  • Lock/unlock exterior/interior doors on campus

  • Provide on campus shuttle service when needed for campers/staff

  • Patrol campus on foot, bicycle and vehicle

  • Observant, alert to surroundings and accurate reporting of safety and security concerns

  • Complete written daily/incident reports

  • Enforcement of campus parking and traffic policies

  • Able to work with exposure to all weather conditions
  • Work effectively with daily guests to the campus, student campers and staff

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree and/or equivalent training and experience. 
  • Previous law enforcement, security experience or working towards degree in a safety profession
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR, AED and First Aid certificate.

  • Valid driver’s license is required

  • Strong written, verbal and computer skills
  • Self-motivated with positive public relations skills, ability to accept responsibility and maintain a courteous and professional demeanor and appearance at all times
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Able to stand/walk for extended periods of time
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of security services.

  • Principles and practices of supervision and leadership; performance evaluation techniques; conflict resolution strategies, and problem solving procedures.

  • Policies, rules, regulations, legal provisions concerning property protection, campus control, and appropriate student behavior.

  • Crowd control procedures and the detection and identification of dangerous drugs and improper substances. 

  • Legal provisions governing security on a boarding school campus, including the control and protection of property. 

  • Safe facility patrol and protection; campus supervision methods and procedures. 

Ability to: 
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate staff. 

  • Plan, organize, and supervise the activities of the department. 

  • Establish priorities. 

  • Develop administrative procedures and operations and evaluate their efficiency and effectiveness, and make recommendations.

  • Perform effective and efficient leadership functions in campus security situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and good judgment.

  • Make decisions based on an assessment of factual information and good judgment. 

  • Enforce campus rules and regulations, and applicable legal provisions. 

  • Perform security patrol, and evening and weekend student supervision and crowd control services. 

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the ICA community and public safety agencies.

  • Must satisfactorily complete the training for Safety Supervisor Certification.
