The Jewish Federation of the East Bay and The Jewish Community Foundation are dedicated to building a vibrant and inclusive local Jewish community and to enhancing the well-being of Jews in the East Bay, Israel, and throughout the world. The Federation’s Annual Campaign raises approximately $3 million to support programs, initiatives and organizations critical to a strong Jewish community. Our goal is to create a cutting edge, donor-centric next generation Federation. The Jewish Community Foundation, a $125 million charitable organization houses endowment funds that benefit the Jewish Community Federation and other local Jewish non-profit organizations. The Foundation also holds more than 200 donor-advised funds and is the umbrella for nearly a dozen supporting foundations. 




Job Description

Federation’s Community Impact department is responsible for managing and implementing grant initiatives; developing and maintaining institutional partnerships and relationships; tracking, measuring, and evaluating grant outcomes and impact; developing and implementing all Federation educational and cultural programs, and working in partnership with volunteer leadership.

The Director of Community Impact reports to the CEO and works closely with the management team to develop and implement new strategies, initiatives, programs, partnership, and processes to bring about the largest community impact in accordance with the organization’s mission, goals and priorities. The Director of Community Impact develops and implements initiatives, strategies, and programs that maximize the Federation’s efforts to generate measurable impact on the community level and increase the visibility of the organization. 

The primary responsibilities of the Director of Community Impact, include managing and implementing grant initiatives; developing and maintaining institutional partnerships and relationships; tracking, measuring, and evaluating grant outcomes and impact; overseeing the development and implementation of Federation educational and cultural programs, and working in concert with Federation and Foundation lay leaders. This position provides oversight of program assessment and evaluations, establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships, and special programs assigned by the CEO. 

The position requires the ability to organize, priorities and delegate responsibilities, to motivate lay leadership and professional staff, to manage and further institutional relationships, and to lead the completion of multiple and varied projects and programs in a timely manner. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 


Strategic Planning 

• Working with the CEO, and with active participation by both lay leaders and staff, to develop and manage both long-range and annual processes to identify the challenges and opportunities facing the community, locally, in Israel, and overseas. 

• Develop vision and strategy for the Community Impact Department including strategies and programs to enhance Jewish education, professional and leadership development, and outreach and engagement. 

• Work in partnership with Director of Development and the Executive Director of The Jewish Community Foundation to create a menu of Strategic Initiatives for major donors for multi-year solicitations. 

• Develop periodic studies of community demographics, needs, affiliations and trends, as needed to assess new initiatives, strategies, and funding. 

• Build evaluation strategies for initiatives focused on Jewish life and community development.


Allocation of Funds 

• Working with Foundation staff, plan, organize, and analyze the allocation of funds from restricted endowments, and from annual and multi-year campaigns with emphasis on building a model that engages lay leaders and Federation/Foundation’s partner organizations. 


Private Foundation Relationships 

• Develop and maintain relationships with private foundations to seek and secure funding for Federation-sponsored projects and programs that benefit partner organizations and the East Bay Jewish community. 

• Work with Department for Community Impact staff to develop reports requested by private foundations to document use of funds and project program impact. 


Community Development, Convening, Planning and Relations 

• Build strong, positive relationships with the lay and professional leadership of all key community partners, including synagogues and other social service, educational and cultural organizations. 

• Educate Federation/Foundation staff and lay leader community on emerging philanthropic issues and trends. 

• Convene critical constituencies in an integrated community planning process on a variety of issues affecting the community. 


Communication, Strategic Partnerships, and Stakeholder Relations 

• Work with Director of Marketing and other senior staff to raise the visibility of the Federation’s new community impact model and highlights the successes and challenges of the new initiatives, strategies, and programs. 

• In conjunction with Director of Marketing review, develop, and coordinate communication vehicles (newsletters, webinars, speeches and presentations, blog posts, social media postings) to keep internal and external stakeholders informed about Federation initiatives. 

• Increase the frequency and flow of information to key Federation and philanthropic audiences 

• Develop strategic partnerships and external relations that further the Federation’s impact-focused efforts. 

• Represent Federation and Foundation within the larger community and philanthropy systems. 


Management 

• Provide staff supervision, planning, allocation and evaluation skills to the Community Impact team. 

• Provide leadership and direction to the lay leaders involved in community impact committee including the community planning process, education, outreach, and leadership development. 

• Provide effective leadership and collaboration with other Federation departments to ensure integration of planning, development, and marketing functions. 

• Develop and manage the annual Community Impact Department budget. 



Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collegially with internal staff and external leaders of other organizations. 

• Outstanding verbal, written, and inter-personal communications skills. 

• Must possess demonstrated financial, analytical and research skills. 

• Must be willing to travel the extent of the Federation’s reach to visit agencies, lay committees, planning meetings and attend key events. 

• Excellent computer skills including familiarity with the Microsoft Office environment, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as Internet search capabilities. 

• Master’s degree in Social Work, Sociology, Social Policy, Jewish Communal Service, Public Administration or related field preferred. 

• Extensive knowledge of and experience working within community development, philanthropy, non-profit management. 

• Knowledge of or experience in Jewish communal services and programming. 

• 3-5 years of senior management experience in non-profit, public sector or for profit organization preferred. 

• Experience in staff management and in maintaining and strengthening communal relationships.
