Job Description

Luth Research seeks a SQL Developer & Database Analyst to serve as a liaison between the business users/research team and the database systems. This person will perform data extraction, analyze and understand the data in data warehouses, and obtain and transform business requirements into functional specifications that result in accurate and quality data output as well as ETL and Report program logic.

The SQL Developer & Database Analyst will be working in a fast paced demanding environment and will report directly to the Senior Executive Vice President of Luth Research.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Extract, analyze, review and interpret data in existing databases to support projects for maximum data accuracy and reliability.
  • Aggregate complex data sets into easily digestible data sets.
  • Flag and resolve data issues, and solve data problems by interpreting SQL stored procedures that update our databases, and by analyzing/validating the data in our databases.
  • Integrate data in different formats (e.g., csv, excel, etc.) into Luth’s Postgres SQL and Greenplum database systems with accuracy, efficiency and scalability.
  • Create visualizations (charts, maps, etc) using various tools including Tableau, Excel and other BI interfaces.
  • Define data quality plans to address data quality issues; work with business users to build business understanding of data issues.
  • Perform data analysis with a deep and comprehensive understanding of Luth’s digital intelligence data collection technology, systems and customers.
  • Create well-written, clear, concise and accurate document artifacts including functional specifications, mapping documents process diagrams test plans and test scripts for the purposes of data warehouse construction, report development, verification etc.
  • Develop and provide superb communication skills in client management, project presentation, company product and service promotion, and team collaboration.
  • Practice and demonstrate exemplary work ethics, self-motivation in learning and taking on new challenges to support sales for the company.
  • Any special projects as requested by senior management.

Qualifications

Education, Experience & Skills:

  • BS or comparable work experience.
  • 2-3 years of experience in IT as a Business Systems Analyst and or QA Analyst in a data warehouse environment, focusing on Data Quality.
  • Solid understanding of SQL, stored procedures and ad-hoc query development in Postgres and Greenplum environments.
  • UNION, INTERSECT, EXCEPT clauses.
  • Nested SQL queries.
  • Windowing queries (Postgres has a distinct flavor).
  • Pivot queries (crosstab function).
  • INNER, LEFT, and OUTER JOINs.
  • EXPLAIN and how to interpret query plans.
  • When/why indexes are useful.
  • Compound indexes and query optimization for compound indexes.
  • PgAdmin.
  • Data loading and dumping.
  • Foreign key constraints as they relate to data manipulation.
  • Hashing for id generation.
  • Understanding of triggers and functions.
  • Comprehensive understanding of relational databases and the data in them.
  • Ability to write requirements to extract data from existing databases, develop transformation rules based on business requirements gathered from non-technical people and test them.
  • Understanding of digital media analytics and reporting is a plus.
  • Experience with Data Conversions, Data Profiling and Root Cause Analysis a plus.
  • Conceptual understanding of OLTP vs Data Warehousing.
  • Experience using Business Objects, Tableau, Excel pivot tables.
