Advocacy Internship / Early Education and Preschool Campaign

  • Intern

Company Description

Massachusetts Fair Share stand up for an America that works for everyone — where we all get a fair shot, do and pay our fair share, and play by the same rules. We organize ordinary people to stand up and take action -- against policies that rig the system in favor of the wealthy and the powerful, and in favor of policies that expand opportunity for the many, not just the few.

Job Description

Every child deserves a fair chance in life, and this begins with quality early education and care. Massachusetts should lead on education, but when it comes to early education, we're falling behind. While states like Oklahoma guarantee a year of public preschool, Massachusetts state spending on early education and care has declined by 50% since 2001 (adjusted for inflation).

The program intern works closely with Massachusetts Fair Share staff to build support across the state for early education. S/he plays an essential role in garnering media attention, and educating the public and lawmakers about why early education is critical. The intern will interact with grassroots supporters, members of the media, local officials, and coalition partners. Experienced Fair Share staff will provide training and mentoring to best prepare interns for careers in political activism, public policy, journalism, and non-profit management.

  • Writing: Create and distribute media materials, including blog entries, press releases, press advisories, letters-to-the-editor, and issue fact sheets.
  • Media Outreach: Organize press conferences, coordinate social media program, call reporters, and maintain a good working relationship with elected officials, issue experts and coalition partners.
  • Network with Elected Officials: Educate elected officials on the importance of early education, and secure support for our campaign goals.

Qualifications

  • Graduated or enrolled in a bachelor’s or associate's degree program in communications, journalism, political science, public relations or a closely related field preferred, but not required.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Understanding of print, broadcast, and online media.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
