Job Description
NBC6 and Telemundo 51, the NBCUniversal Local stations serving South Florida, are looking for a bilingual journalist to serve as an Assignment Editor in our duopoly’s multiplatform newsroom. You will be responsible for facilitating newsgathering and coordinating comprehensive coverage of news stories.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assign and manage story coverage plans, photographers, and resources to maximize duopoly and newsroom efficiency.
- Maintain continuous communication with field crews, sharing changes and critical information.
- Monitor police scanners, law enforcement, fire agencies, websites, and social media to identify breaking and developing news and confirm details with official sources.
- Participate in editorial meetings and contribute story ideas using editorial judgment.
- Develop, cultivate, and maintain contacts essential to news coverage throughout South Florida.
- Check clerk of courts sites regularly for upcoming trials and hearings.
- Check and reply to viewer emails and phone calls with story tips.
- Make daily beat checks and delegate to others to do the same.
- Maintain accurate, real-time documentation of daily stories in Slack, the newsroom computer system, and content grids, ensuring video is properly attached.
- Help coordinate interviews and logistics for field crews, producers, and newscasts.
- Collaborate with producers and crew to establish live shot locations, and other news content as needed.
- Organize and communicate live signals and feeds.
- Update and publish news content across platforms, including broadcast, web, streaming, and social media.
- Alert management team as appropriate when action is needed on a story.
- Request credentials for staff to cover important events.
- Coordinate coverage with NBC News Group, Telemundo networks, owned stations, and affiliates.
- Knowledge of newsroom automation systems, online storage, and computer languages or equivalent work experience.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience as an Assignment Editor preferably in the Miami market.
- Bilingual (Spanish and English)
- Must be technically competent and able to learn and use newsroom systems as they develop, have proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- General knowledge of television news techniques, including how stories should be covered and assembled.
- Ability to multitask and make quick decisions under pressure.
- Experience with coordinating and pulling in feeds and live signals.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong social media, streaming and multiplatform knowledge.
Desired:
- Bachelor’s degree or relevant job experience required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal court procedures.
- Researching skills required.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work well with people while under pressure.
- Familiarity with local leaders and jurisdiction lines is a plus.
- Up to date on and interested in current news events.
- Knowledge of laws of libel, slander and applicable FCC rules and regulations.
- Personal initiative and ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Team player who is flexible.
- Displays a positive work ethic and can work under tight deadlines.
- High degree of integrity and professionalism.
Eligibility Requirements:

- Must have ability to work any of a 24x7 shift.
- Must be willing to work nights, weekends, long hours and a variety of shifts, when assigned.
- Must be willing to work in high-risk emergency situations including hurricanes.
