Founded in 1946, the 83-member orchestra is today the largest performing arts nonprofit in the state of Tennessee. Job Description

Reports to: Director of Education and Community Engagement

Program Summary: Accelerando is an intensive education program designed to prepare gifted young students from under represented ethnic communities for pursuing music at the collegiate level and beyond. Accelerando seeks to create professional opportunities for these students by providing them with instruction, mentorship, performance experience and assistance with applying for music schools.

Target Start Date: January 2017

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary education and community engagement representative to coordinate scheduling and execution of Accelerando. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, auditions, recruitment of students and faculty, lessons, juries, performances, and advisories
  • Serve on the Accelerando Steering Committee
  • Support Education and Community Engagement Department in communication efforts to various constituent groups and cultivate relationships with schools, colleges, etc.
  • Cultivate and develop relationships with the students and families to guide them through the complexities of the program
  • Cultivate and develop relationships internally, with Nashville Symphony staff and musicians, and externally, with key community partners including Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Conexión Américas, and Choral Arts Link
  • Create text and reservation forms for all Accelerando pages on the NSO website, and update as necessary throughout the season
  • Stay abreast of local and national education policies and maintain relationships with local teaching personnel
  • Assist in the preparation of publications and promotional materials, perform routine research, compile statistical data and proofread as needed
  • Organize and maintain program databases, manage program files, and process payroll for Accelerando
  • Provide general administrative support to Education and Community Engagement programs as needed
  • Adhere to all rules and regulations set forth in Collective Bargaining Agreement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music, arts administration / management and/or education, or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience working as a music educator or performer; working knowledge of school systems
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • Thorough understanding of music education, music education research, local education and performing arts initiatives
  • Thorough knowledge of symphonic repertoire and instrumentation
  • Effective and efficient written and oral communications skills
  • Stellar organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to schedule priorities to maximize efficiency and institutional goals
  • Ability to administer multiple projects simultaneously and work under precise deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and use independent judgment while keeping supervisor informed of work activity and issues
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret and create routine and complex documents
  • Ability to maintain the strictest of confidence as needed
