Job Description

The role of the Primary Assistant is to support the Head Teacher in various aspects of a 3-6 age classroom. Help students engage in meaningful work and maintain the classroom environment as a space that inspires and supports intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development

  • Support the Head Teacher as directed in matters regarding classroom, curriculum and students
  • Provide instruction to students at the request of the Head Teacher
  • Help maintain attendance and other written or electronic records as directed by the Head Teacher
  • Assist in transitions to recess, carpool, after school and other activities at scheduled times as assigned
  • Assist in supervising students at lunch, recess and nap times
  • Defer to Head Teacher in parent communication; respectfully direct parents to the Head Teacher 
  • Support classroom events and trips including, but not limited to: Farmessori, breakfasts, and performances
  • Assist in preparing, maintaining and cleaning the classroom environment and materials
  • Observe student behaviors and step in when appropriate, communicating student progress or concerns with the Head Teacher
  • Maintain order and manage the class in a subtle and non-disruptive manner; work with the Head Teacher to preserve and protect lessons
  • Provide follow up support for students on lessons as directed by the Head Teacher
  • Act in a way that exemplifies and models the school’s expectations of grace and courtesy
  • Assist in students’ development of independence
  • Attend and participate in meetings and training sessions for position, classroom, or level 

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED, Bachelor’s degree a plus
  • Experience working with children 6 and under in an educational or related setting
  • Effective communicator, verbal and written, with children and adults
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a variety of settings and environments
  • Basic understanding of a child’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high level of support and assistance
  • Physical ability and stamina to support small children throughout the day which includes frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, sitting, standing and other general movements to connect at the student’s level
