The New World Symphony (NWS), America’s Orchestral Academy, is a laboratory for generating new ideas about the way music is taught, presented and experienced. The NWS pursues its work in a Frank Gehry-designed campus that is uniquely suited to embrace the digital future, for education and artistic expression. Its iconic concert auditorium features a nearly 360-dgree projected video and lighting capability; a large additional complement of theatrical lighting; 10 robotic cameras and a broadcast media suite; and top-of-the-line audio recording and sound reinforcement equipment. The NWS recently completed a 4K Upgrade Project, transforming the performance hall and video infrastructure into a 12G fully 4KUHD environment.  This includes:  a 64x48 12G For-A Hanabi 6000 switcher, For-A HD & UHD routers (64x64 & 144x144), For-A multi-viewer (64x8 in HD), four Insight 12G UHD servers (2 play/6 rec), four AJA KiPro Ultra+ recorders, two ClassX CGs, 13 Hitachi 4K broadcast cameras, six Panasonic 4K PTZs, full patch bays and plenty of For-A terminal gear.

Job Description

Position Summary

The successful candidate for this position will join a team in producing media-rich performances for live audiences, for webcast, and for live simulcast onto the New World Center’s exterior projection façade – the largest permanent exterior projection surface in North America. Additionally, they will work closely with the Chief Video Engineer to support the many and varied visiting productions with heavy focus on supporting guests who may be in need of video support during rentals. 

 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain integrity of video equipment and video infrastructure throughout facility; perform routine maintenance and simple repairs 
  • Maintain integrity of projectors and projection infrastructure throughout facility; perform routine maintenance and simple repairs 
  • Work closely with Chief Video Engineer, Technical Director, production staff, and potential renters to identify equipment, personnel and video/projection infrastructure needs for upcoming rentals; work as lead video engineer for rental projects as necessary; oversee contract video staff as necessary for rental events
  • Work with Chief Video Engineer to identify and prioritize repairs and maintenance
  • Work at any assigned position in the control booth or operate cameras during webcasts, WALLCASTS, archival concert recordings, and Internet2 activities taking place in the Main Hall or Sun Trust Pavilion (robotic camera operator, titling, switching etc…)
  • Perform other video-related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • An AAS, BA or BFA in Television Production or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of experience in broadcast engineering working with state-of-the-art broadcast video equipment; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of broadcast automation and ancillary systems
  • Knowledge of audio and video signal flow through a broadcast facility
  • Knowledge of and experience with For-A switching consoles/multi-viewer/routing/terminal gear, Telemetrics robotic cameras, ClassX Character Generators, various 4K cameras including Hitachi and Panasonic, and Ravenna mixing consoles
  • Knowledge of and experience with fiber optic (single mode & multi-mode) including SMPTE
  • Knowledge of and experience working with media servers (Insight)
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of video streaming and compression methods and formats
  • Strong IT skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to exercise great attention to detail
  • Ability to develop, refine and present technical documentation
  • Ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously in a multi-activity work environment
  • Ability to read music and follow musical scores is helpful
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Mac OS) and Christie projectors and Pandora’s Box, D3 or Watchout software is helpful

 Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for an extended period and lift/carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work an extended and variable schedule
