What's the role?

The Federal Relations Leader, Washington, DC office will help foster Northwestern Mutual’s success by working to defeat or influence legislative and regulatory proposals that would adversely impact our products, distribution, or the company, and by advocating for proposals that create greater opportunity for effective financial security planning. In addition to serving as the company’s lead liaison with federal lawmakers, this individual will:

  • Strategically engage home office leaders, issue experts and members of NM’s field force in advocacy efforts including meetings with Members of Congress and their staff.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Company and various departments on pending legislative and regulatory proposals to ensure timely and prudent corporate action.
  • Direct and oversee the activities performed by outside lobbyists and consultants retained by the company.
  • Represent the Company in industry trade association meetings, conferences, and seminars to educate and communicate the impacts of various legislative and regulatory proposals.
  • Oversee the Company’s grassroots engagement efforts.
  • Direct the Company’s federal political giving program including budgeting and making recommendations for political action committee contributions and representing the Company at political fundraisers.

 

 

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:.

 

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years of federal public policy experience as either a senior congressional staff member or advocating before Congress on behalf of a corporation, trade association, or other interest group.
  • Advanced degree in law, public policy, business or similar fields preferred.
  • Experience with tax law and/or the regulations and laws impacting life insurance/financial services industry preferred.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and negotiation skills are required, as well as the ability to work as part of a team with a diverse group of individuals, both in the public and private sectors.
  • Position based locally in Washington, DC and requires frequent travel to NM’s home office in Milwaukee, WI, and occasional travel to field network offices and other industry meetings.
  • Experience and/or comfort working autonomously.
  • Experience thinking, planning and executing resourcefully and creatively.
