What's the role?

This position has been classified as an Access Person, which will require the reporting of your personal securities transactions.  This position has been classified as an Associated Person under NMIS guidelines and requires fingerprinting and completion of required form.  As part of Northwestern Mutual Capital’s (“NMC”) accounting and finance team, the candidate will have a diverse set of responsibilities within NMC’s $36+ billion portfolio.  The position will be responsible for preparing quarterly private equity fund financial statements as well as analyzing NMC’s private mezzanine debt and equity investments, working closely with the investment teams on assigned portfolio companies, and general portfolio management reporting.  Primary duties include quarterly private equity accounting, portfolio valuations and financial metric analysis.  Perform quarterly valuation of private company investments; proactively analyze results and changes in valuation.  Use analytical judgment to assess financial ratios / covenants to determine the financial health of portfolio companies.  Work closely with investment teams by providing financial / accounting expertise on assigned investments. Ensure compliance with internal controls of the private equity valuation process.  Communicate with portfolio company management and private equity sponsors. Prepare analysis and materials for internal and external clients. Utilize firm’s proprietary software tools for portfolio company valuation and tracking.  Ensure relevant portfolio company financial statement data is input into standard templates and database.  Responsible for various NMC special projects and reporting.

  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in audit, private equity accounting, transaction advisory services, or portfolio valuation
  • BA/BS in Finance, Accounting, or Economics
  • CPA preferred or working toward CPA designation
  • A strong working knowledge of accounting principles and practices related to portfolio valuations, demonstrated decision making, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated experience with financial statements and analysis including strong detail orientation
  • Exposure to private company valuation methods desired (use of publicly traded comparable multiples, discounted cash flow modeling, and debt pricing)
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast moving, demanding, and dynamic environment
  • A high degree of personal initiative and self-motivation is required, as well as the ability to work independently to find solutions to issues
  • Ability to multi-task responsibilities to meet tight deadlines of deliverables with accurate results
  • Creative problem solver with strong interpersonal skills
