What's the role?

An Accounting Intern in the Controllers department will be assigned to one division of the department but have the opportunity to shadow the other divisions on a quarterly basis and potentially rotate to a different division after one year.  The specific responsibilities within each division will vary.  Basic responsibilities for all Interns include entry of general ledger journal entries into the accounting system, reconciliation of accounts, and completion of various projects that may be assigned.  The function of each division within the Controllers department is as follows:

 

Accounting Operations:  Assures that financial activity related to Northwestern Mutual’s insurance and investment products is appropriately accounted for.  Reconciles cash balances for Northwestern Mutual, its subsidiaries and affiliates.

 

Corporate Reporting:  Coordinates, prepares and distributes financial statements and reports for various Northwestern Mutual entities.  Measures, analyzes and reports on the financial results and key performance indicators for all product lines.

 

Investment Accounting:  Assures that all financial activity related to the investment portfolios is accounted for in the general ledger.  Monitors the financial results of the investments and prepares financial and compliance reports, analysis and disclosures to meeting all reporting requirements.

 

Mutual Fund Accounting:  Performs the daily accounting and financial reporting for the investments of the Northwestern Mutual Series Funds, including the calculation of the daily net asset value for each fund.  Prepares and reports the financial and tax accounting results for all investments owned by the mutual funds.  Ensures fund compliance with SEC laws, IRS regulations, and internal investment restrictions.

 

Tax:  Completes federal, state and local corporate tax returns. Performs reporting and payment of local, state and federal taxes.  Prepares estimates of income taxes and year-end tax accruals.  Assures compliance with federal, state, local and foreign tax laws and regulations.

 

Product Finance:  Supports the Company’s product lines with financial analysis to facilitate strategic planning, product pricing and profitability measurement and reporting.

  • Actively enrolled as an Accounting major; must have completed/be currently enrolled in Intermediate Accounting course
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Displays a professional attitude
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work and resolve routine problems

    HOURS:

     

  • Part-time (20-25 hours per week) during school year
  • The work assignment is for approximately one year
  • Possibility of additional hours during breaks
