Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground operation. A recent consent to develop the previous Martha mine has provided our project with an extension of life providing our 350 staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.
Job Description
This position is responsible for management and analysis of geospatial data, creating maps, and utilising GIS tools to optimise technical investigations, design, exploration, mining, and environmental operations for the Waihi North Project and existing operation. The role supports mine development consent applications, regular reporting, and HSE duties in compliance with New Zealand regulatory standards and local stakeholder expectations.
Key responsibilities:
- Maintain and improve the storage, access, and utilisation of geospatial data using GIS software (ArcGIS, MapInfo Discover) and other relevant mining applications (e.g. Deswick, Leapfrog Geo, MicroMine, etc.).
- Integrate GIS data with environmental monitoring systems and mine planning software specific to Waihi north Project and Waihi operations.
- Create and/or import new and updated data into the GIS system, incorporating robust data validation processes.
- Produce maps, plans, and cross-sections from GIS or other software as required, ensuring data quality and consistency across all Waihi projects, including legacy datasets and new data.
- Liaise with other departments, consultants, and external agencies (NZPAM, WorkSafe, local councils) for specific GIS data and plan requests in a timely manner.
- Document and maintain clear metadata for all spatial datasets.
- Update spatial databases to reflect changes in mine infrastructure, environmental boundaries, and exploration targets unique to Waihi.
- Implement data backup and disaster recovery protocols tailored to Waihi’s operational needs.
- Assist in producing figures and spatial data visualizations for regular and annual technical reporting as required, including NZPAM, WorkSafe, and internal/external stakeholder reports.
- Support the preparation of consent applications and environmental impact assessments with accurate GIS data.
Qualifications
- Full and current driver licence; ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred.
- GIS qualification or demonstrated experience in the field required.
- A degree in geology, engineering or environmental science would be an advantage.
- Postgraduate diploma in computing, data management / GIS would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of New Zealand mining and environmental regulations relevant to Waihi operations.
- At least 5 years utilizing and maintaining GIS data.
- Experience with ArcGIS, MapInfo Discover or similar preferred.
- Demonstrated experience supporting exploration, environmental, infrastructure, planning or mining operations in New Zealand or similar jurisdictions.
