Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for design and mechanical engineering of Li-ion battery systems including all electro-mechanical assemblies. With importance of good design on both volumetric and gravimetric energy density of a battery pack, this position requires strong working knowledge of mechanical design principles, integration of high voltage electro-mechanical components, and computer aided engineering. The Mechanical Engineer is engaged from the prototype stage through launch and understands the mechanical, electro-mechanical, electrical and functional interfaces throughout the battery. The Mechanical Engineer has experience with complex mechanical and electromechanical systems and is expected to develop detailed understanding of the functionality of all components inside the battery pack including (module design, cell to cell connection, cooling concepts, retention, etc.).

Primary Responsibilities:
• Gathering inputs from team members to synthesize battery pack & module design concepts, requirements, and specifications
• Lead development of detailed CAD including system interfaces, master and detailed part models
• Complete battery life-cycle design management: Release new battery system and component designs, recommend engineering changes to battery designs, and manage design changes
• Works with product lifecycle management to manage and release structured bill of materials.
• Estimate and adhere to project timing and costs, including component, tooling and purchased services.
• Works closely with Systems Engineer, Program Manager and Integration Engineer to ensure mechanical design fulfills all functions necessary for the safe and cost effective operation of battery assemblies.
• Provide guidance subcontractors as well as managing prototype vendors for parts fabrication.

Additional Support Responsibilities:
• Ensure pack mechanical design also addresses key requirements for volume production like manufacturability, serviceability and recyclability
• Proactively support design validation teams in test plan reviews to ensure testing strategies and methods truly stress and verify design compliance and safety.
• During prototype testing phases: Support customer onsite with system reviews and troubleshooting/problem solving. Provide lessons learned feedback to the appropriate internal and customer engineering teams as issues are encountered and resolved.
• Assess and benchmark competitive technologies for innovation, cost, performance, and functional advantages.
• Proactively support system DFMEAs/PFMEAs
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications;

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years of mechanical engineering product design; prior battery energy storage design experience highly desired.
• 1-3+ years SolidWorks CAD software experience is desired. Experience with other CAD modeling tools can also be considered.
• Experience with basic thermal design/heat transfer including cooling flow, structural design, and materials
• Experience in designing metal and plastic parts (formed, injection molded or die cast, machined, extruded, etc.)
• Strong English skills, both spoken and written

Key Competencies:
• Knowledge of battery systems related to design: Module and pack enclosures; retention of battery cells; cell tab joining/inter-connects; thermal management; vehicle integration experience a plus.
• Working knowledge of industry standards for testing, IP, UL, Thermal, Shock, Vibration, EMI, ESD and etc.
• Ability to perform or lead/direct design optimization studies using CAE tools to balance project budget, product cost, and performance requirements
• Design and release experience, with disciplined change management and technical project management experience
• Demonstrated Manufacturing Launch experience, ,supporting manufacturing engineering from initial development to launch
• Robust Engineering design experience- Work closely customers and technical experts to define a system that meets the system performance requirements in the presence of noise factors (DFSS)
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – position requires strong interaction in multi-functional team environment particularly in high-pressure situations (e.g., launch)
• Able to rapidly and clearly communicate issues, options, benefits, priorities, and recommendations to technical team members.
• Detailed oriented in the execution of assignments and deliverables
• Takes actions and displays behaviors that demonstrate ownership in the success of the company; overcomes obstacles to achieve results
• Demonstrates primary focus on meeting both internal and external customer needs when identifying, prioritizing and accomplishing tasks.
• Effectively participates in teams to reach desired outcomes either as a team leader or team member.
