Job Description

Role

The selected Forestry Intern will be additive to the wood procurement team and function by participating in field activities supporting the consistent delivery of high-quality wood fiber to one of our integrated Mill sites and respective woodyards.  This position is intended to supplement your education and field of study with relevant exposure to all facets of the industrial forest products setting.  Experience will be gained in the areas of timber cruising & appraisal, mapping, harvest layout & administration, negotiation, contractor management, inventory management, quality control, safety policies & controls, and other business elements that pertain to a successful wood procurement program.

Accountabilities

  • Assist with timber cruising, harvest layout, and timber sale administration.
  • Conduct timber harvest inspections and complete supplier visitation reports. 
  • Monitor adherence to Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Best Management Practices principles after becoming familiar with them.
  • Assess and report on wood quality issues at wood receiving yards and active timber sales.
  • Completion of special projects involving time studies, wood quality, yield trends, and supplier analysis.
  • Other supportive duties and tasks, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled and pursuing a degree in forestry, natural resources, wood science, paper science, or other closely related field.
  • Must be detailed oriented and able to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Exposure to MS Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
  • Reliability and punctuality, a must.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (safety glasses, hard hat, full coverage protective toe footwear, and safety vest).
  • Must possess a valid driver license, a clean motor vehicle record, and exhibit good driving skills.  Driving a company issued vehicle 25% - 50% of the day should be expected as well as the occasional overnight stay.
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods of time with variable topography and weather conditions.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
